as far as money, producers seem to eat better as a whole then rappers..... if it came down to one or the other, i would stick to production because it really leads to so many more oppurtunties; i.e., film scores, commercials, video games, etc.....

the thing with rapping is that you dont need anything at all to do, so if all i did was rap i would have a lot more money in my bank account! producing can make you want to quit when you are early into it, or when you are getting better and want better gear but the ends aint comin in...

Both,
A lot of good production or producers have good beats, but the music is brought to life by their songwriting, i.e. neptunes, rodney jerkins, and others. You get more money and notiriaty if you can give somebody a song over than just giving someone a beat. I like to write whenever I need a break from staring at the blue screen on the the trition, or my finger tips get sore from abusing the MP. It breaks up the manotnee, to sit back and write or just put down some vocals ideas over a beat your working on. You got to be a producer slash something. Producer/songwriter Producer/engineer Producer/CEO

But between the two ,a producer has a lot more long term benefits than a rapper.Like Truth said

If your a producer in the industry .... your ageless. You can be a 55 year old man behind the boards or behind the music. If your a artist you have a limited time that you can be sucessfull. How many of you know a 55 year old rapper? In the rap game you have to have youth. Image is everything in Hop Hop. But being a producer allows you to have more longevity .... you wont have a label telling you to lose weight .... look like this .... look like that. There really is no image that a producer has to live up to. Plus, whats a rapper without a hot beat? I feel producers need rappers just as much rappers need us but we still have the advantage.

i do both but most the time i find myself producin more than rappin. well like soundboy2 said ima producer/rapper/arranger/engineer/Dj/songwriter//ghostwriter/wut ever i want to be. but producin beats all dat ish to me. cuz i like makin beats and when you produce and arrange a piece its kinda like makin a beat to me for some reason.

If you can flow, do both. You know how you like beats, and what would make the song fyre so try it.

well from a music standpoint producers make more money, but in terms of from other standpoints rappers have the oppunrity to make more money...(movie deals, endorsements.etc..even though I did see dre in a couple commericals, and neptunes...) It really depends what you want, I mean If you want to make lots of money spend your time in the studio making beats. and get mad respect from those who love hip hop production then be a producer...if you want to be the man on Rolling stone, and Trl and have millions and millions of people flock to come see you...ur name on the album, ur name on the tv screens, and ur name catching hell from those who dont like your music, then be a rapper, personaly id rather choose rapper cause whatever anyone says the best from of communication is not music, its WORD OF MOUTH....but i cant nock hip hop production...its a staple in getting your words across..

i think it's dope when people produce and rap, but really i think that the big guns all either do oe or the other, look at jay-z, nas, bigl, pac, biggie etc, all are rappers and probaly have never touched a keyboard in there life. This is fine the exception is eminem, he's getting production credit and he's the best rapper in the world. I know he has a dope band behind his beats so he is for from a one man team.
