you wanna make money with music in your town? try this.... you might need a 5 year plan to do it.

Rent a warehouse

Get the equipment to run a print shop (flyers, cd's shirts, vehicle wraps etc.) Put the print shop in the back, project studio up front. Become a one stop shop for the "up and comming" rapper. Run package deals to produce, duplicate, and possibly on a small scale distribute ENTIRE PROJECTS. Run Bar/Door splits with local venues, throw shows and charge the artists to perform, if they bring more than 20 paying customers waive their stage fee. Be creative. Be a hustler. Quit Bitching.

you just gotta get your business together man...I know a couple of guys who have this set up....One guy built it from nicks and dimes and the other guy is college educated and went the business loan route. Both guys are PILLARS of the miami hip hop scene.

A producer makes music as a hobby first and tries to sell beats to get some income....once the clientele is established and made enough money to quit their job.....Then you could do the things you want to do.....like the whole rent a warehouse thing...

No one starts making joints thinking they don't need an income first to get the ball rolling....

It doesn't make sense to me...

That's like saying that people shouldn't sell shit on ebay to make extra money....

Producers produce records and beatmakers make beats...Beatmakers get screwed until they learn to produce.

I dont know any of you guys well enough to say who is what, but if you are a beatmaker you will never make decent money selling beats. The best shot a beatmaker has is to hook up with a producer and run it like the neptunes, the runners etc. But beat makers cant blame anyone else but themselves for not being paid cause most broke ass rappers aint tryin to finance a broke ass beatmaker. Cause like i said before, without the grind and production skill of the rapper (especially if he is recording and mixing it!) your "potential hit single" aint shit but ones and zeros in the matrix.

Producers always get paid though.

Look, dont get me wrong if you can find a rapper simple enough to pay for tracks for a free mixtape, then cool take his money. But, you're a dick straight up. Not only are you making a MINIMAL contribution to the project but you are also shootn youself in the foot cause now emcee X promotion budget is minus whatever your fee is. That means less exposure for you.

lots of us on here making a living selling beats. And of course producing, engineering, composing. Hate to say it but there are more pros on this production site than any other I am aware of.

explain how getting paid for your beats is being a dick? This is the second time you have said that, i dont understand whats wrong with it?

@Tekboi...you are living in a fantasy world brova! Like I said If I can get FREE ONES from Cool and Dre for my artists I aint paying YOU a dime....
.

Lmao, that's the dumbest shit i've ever read on any hip-hop forum. How would a beat-maker get to a professional level if nobody pays him until he gets there? You won't make it anywhere in the industry with that attitude. Going by that logic, rappers should never get paid either, until they are famous and go multi-platinum. If 50 cent, Lil Wayne, Eminem, etc.. pays for beats, what makes you think that you're an exception? because you got lucky with a free beat?

That doesn't mean you're entitled to free beats forever. The comment about artist paying for song quality and not beats is just absolutely retarded and shows how much you really know about the game.

Pharrell, Timbaland and a gang of others get paid over $200,000 JUST FOR A BEAT. Not the overall product... JUST THE BEAT. Do your research.

In-House producers make plenty of money. Look at Zaytoven, Johnny Julianno, some others and of course ME .... are far from broke. If we're not supposed to make money, how come we're making it. Is it some kind of miracle? smh.... What you define as "professional" and what really is professional are two totally different things. The only thing that makes a person a "professional" is the quality work that they produce. If I have a studio in my mothers basement and can produce the same quality music as dr. dre, kanye etc... then by definition I'm a professional too.

It's not me living in a fantasy world. It's YOU, living in a world where up & coming producers make no money until they magically obtain multi-million dollar studios from artists that DON'T pay them. And I'm not yo "brova" nigga.

I'm just stating how it is....not how it should be. I mean if you're making a living why even bother arguing the point, if you're making a living then obviously you are a professional. This shit aint a personal attack on none of ya'll bois.

Just the beat...then the labels splash all over the place on the album cover "includes the single (song name) produced by Timbaland"

Then the video has Timbaland in it....

Then the artist shouts out Timbaland in the song....

But yeah...if you could make a hotter joint than him...why not get paid for it? In order to become "professional" they have to actually become professional...by selling beats and making money enough to quit their jobs..not quit your jobs and hope you sell beats....You'd be a fool to do that....

Some dude came up to me after a beat battle and offered me $1000 for a beat I played...

Think I'm gonna turn that down? Hell NO.....and it's getting as good exposure a local artist can get with a featured artist who happens to be signed to a label deal with The Game....

Going by that logic, rappers should never get paid either, until they are famous and go multi-platinum.

Thats pretty much how it works anyway. a rapper gets signed gets an advance and then until the label breaks even the rapper doesnt get a dime. If the label never breaks even the rapper never gets a dime in royalties, and the way 360 deals are going with the labels getting a slice of all merchandising and performance income, the rappers are getting paid less than ever.

Well, I guess that's the rappers problem. Like I said, it's their problem. I'm not going to give tracks away because a rapper is broke, unless that rapper is making some moves. Nobody works for free.

And this whole thread only reinforces my point. If there weren't so many producers bringing down the value of production, this wouldn't be a discussion. I've been in the game long enough to see when it started going downhill and that is why. People like LouBez think that all beatmakers should work for free now because of so many giving them away.

Bro I think the only person thats convinced you've proven an indefinite point about all this is yourself. Dont sweat the small stuff and just keep grinding to get to a better place. If your productions are quality people will recognize that...If your a professional individual and you conduct yourself that way with your clientèle, people will recognize that as well...

Yea, I haven't read that a million times on message boards before.

And I'm not arguing with anybody, he has his view, and I have mine. Agree to disagree.
