Producer / Arranger

Someone who produces is the person that oversee's the song ... if the arranger does something the producer doesn't like then the producer has the final say so. The producer doesn't have to even make a beat ...... all he has to do is nod his head to what he likes. The producer tells people what he wants and its there job to do it.

The arranger just adds his 2 cents on what how he feels the song should be arranged. He is the one that manually does it ...he cuts, copys and paste the vocals or he would do the drop outs in the song, like where the bridge comes in at and where the hook comes in and verses should go.

Basicly the producer can do it all but sometimes they hire people to do it for them, so they can focus on other things.

Hey,

I always thought an arranger was someone who took a piece of music and wrote out the different parts for different instruments.

Example: if someone took a rock song and wanted an orchestra to play it, the arranger would sit down and listen to the original song, figure out the melodies, figure out the progression, and write out the sheet music for the violins, cellos, etc.

Producer roles are a-changin' fast! I think traditionally a producer was the person who saw a project from start to finish. He would choose the direction a track would go, hire the right people to get the job done, and decide when everything was ready to go. If needed, he would step in and play instruments to add his signature to a track during tracking or in post-production.

Nowadays I think producer means 'kid with an MPC and a crack of Cool Edit'.

And then there are programmers, engineers, editors...what are their roles?

They're just titles, in my opinion, a lot of roles cross different boundaries...

my cousin is an arranger for a church choir in Ga and she just makes sure that evryone singin is on point.... ex(tone, pitch, lenght/sustanence of note, mood/feeling of notes) theres another guy that "makes the beats." I think an arranger is just a person that make sure everything is in sync rythmically.....i would say that any serious producer is also an arranger in some form but many producers hire there seperate arrangers(P Diddy's got like 5) because they specialize in certain fields.(voice, nstrument, notes placement..and so on) but to answer your question a producer doesn't have to play any beats or even know anything about instruments.....They just have the final say. You think Damon Dash knows anything about beatmaking?..all a producer really has to do is say...yeah the song good enough put it out now!
