I hate to be a voice of reason, but you two (alone) are probably the wrong people to be doing this. You really don't know what will TRULY separate you from the herd and what you are going to offer, but your friend is hell bent on making it anyway- and if it can be thrown together in a short amount of time, it can't be too comprehensive.

You're programmers. You need visionaries and creatives on your team.
A business person alone would be concerned with expenses. How are you going to pay for this and how will you make money?

Free means Ads (which everyone hates)
Subscriptions (which everyone hates) means you need one helluva gimmick/engine since there are tons of other free alternatives.

look at the differece between small social networks and large one. One dominates and then another knocks the king off the hill

Mostly because of mismanagement. MySpace would still be king if they addressed the SPAM and modernized the interface and features. Instead they were more worried about Selling MySpace to the highest bidder instead of being concerned with adapting to the changing landscape of Social Networking. 99% of Social Networking is a fad.

Fads, pretty much drive the internet.
From Viral Videos to overnight success to 15 minutes of fame. It's all being played out in mouse clicks.
