Yes and no. I only eq a sample if it sounds too plain. But if there is a bass line behind the sample i want to bring out i will raise the bass. Same with a higher sound. Ya feel me? Reverb or compression if it sounds too dull or boring.

sometimes i like to give the sample that dirty, rough sound so i might boost the his and los and drop the mids a little, this can really fuck up a sample tho so i only use that in some cases. also i like the unique sound that the sample gets.

I wanted to know if y'all put eq on your samples and if ya do what kind of settings do you use.

Well, i for one thing put eq on just about everything, lots of parametric eqing. This question really really depends on the type of sample and what you want to do with it. Just like anything else in your music you are mxing, you are mixing it to fit in, be absent, or stand out in certain parts of your frequency range. I suggest you do some illmuzik forum searching or googling on EQing and/or mixing techniques, your question will then be answered soon enough. :)

I dont eq or compress, you need a clean sample meaning nutral eq'ing ( like none, all knobs centered ). This is because the sample will be processed throughout the production, form comes first, logicaly followed by signal processing ( eq+dynamics ) in the mix. Keep the samples as clean as possible and record them as loud as possible without giving your VU readings pms ( all in the red ) and dont forget that all you can do to a sample comes in the end except your not dealing with the sample but the track where the sample is featured. It's a non destructive approach, just like monitor mixing.

Alittle eqing can really make a sample. If you know what you are doing you can bring some really nice drums out of a sample.

yeah i would wait till the beat is ready to mix, meaning arranged and finished. Then eq to get everything to sit nice. If u do it before your kinda stuck with it the way it is, instead of being able to go back to it.

Do you all EQ on a computer or you got a rackmount EQ? I do the rackmount shit. I got a 2-Channel 15-Band. I like stickin to an all hardware setup and only hardware if i need to. I lookin into gettin a compressor and figurin out how to use it, but im tryin to save some money right now.

Man honestly, it all depends on tha sample - like every time is different according to how tha sample sounds and what needs to be done with it. On occasion i EQ my samples, but i find myself filtering them much much more than EQing. Ill take all tha resonance outa tha bass and and make it more prominant, or ill take a HP filter and drop it on tha entire thing and than compress if needed. - I also like to fuck with tha LFO settings and screw with tha sample that way.
