Let me start by saying I'm not the smartest guy in the world...especially when it comes to book smarts...I'm more of a street smarts kind of guy. And I do often mispell words or even type in slang...sometimes I even type a word to make it reflect my Brooklyn/Jersey accent. But on some real shit....I can't even understand some of ya mafuckas posts. I'll sit here for a couple of minutes and start flippin out cause I don't know what this guy was saying. It's disgusting. If you're doing it on purpose, stop. Shit is not cool...you look ignorant. If it's not on purpose, then try harder. I don't mean to put anyone down but looking and acting ignorant is not cool...it's one of the reasons why America doesn't take the hip hop community seriously. We're the "monkeys at the zoo". They point and laugh at us. Just like the Chapelle "Pixie" skit when he showed the Ying Yang Twins acting like monkeys on cribs. That shit is embarrasing and so is reading some of your posts for real. I love this website and for the most part I respect everyone here. But start having some respect for yourselves.

Damn, well said.

Might i add that writing in all caps, or partial caps, is extremely annoying, and just makes it harder to read what youve said. It also makes you look like a sixth grade girl.

This should pick a sticky.

Most people try to type the same way that they speak, and also some people aren't up on internet etiquette (all caps etc.), its many reasons, but the threadstarter is on point with his analysis.

Kayne musta got into your head. school is nothing but a backup plan.. or viceversa. the important fact is too pick an upcoming industry like bionanotechnology and not business. thats all i have to say about that

backup to success is the matter concerning

success is not working BS to keep your apartment/home

no working BS is hard for poeple like me because i quit any position where any mothafucka care less about my workethic to their power over my employment.

Most rappers are idiots.. that is the plain truth... At least the ones on MTV and in the clubs so of course a stereotype will arise that hip hoppers are ignorant.. Stereotypes often harbor truths, though they may be distorted..

Rappers are "cool" to many immpressionable kids though to me they prance around like morons masking their lack of musical skill talking about topics of negavity with no positive outcome. It's not like 2Pac who rapped about negative aspects like violence but you could learn where that came from.. now it's all rapping about violence with no substance, and partying with no purpose. I don't think it's cool to do lot's of the things these wack gangster rappers do, but since people support them that's what happens.. stupid people represent hip hop.. until we start supporting educated intelligent artists, hip hoppers will be looked at as a bunch of "monkeys see monkeys do."

That's really what's happening anyhow, so maybe there is some truth to it.. you got a few rappers who make it and a whole bunch of wannabes who listen to their music trying to act like them, look like them, and be like them in general. Those rappers have a minute amount of musical ability and the wannabes have even less than that so the stereotype holds true in that situation. Creativity is a component of intelligence and the wannabes lack that since all they do is copy the rappers style.

Staying in school does not gurantee intelligence, wisdom, creativity or whatever people expect to gain from it. This is not to stay drop out of school, no, but there are many great business men and successful people that did drop out of school. The key here however, is that they dropped out, but went on and educated themselves in something they were passionate about in the real world not school. they were not getting what they wanted in school, so they looked for what really worked for them outside the box.

Education is really important, but school is not the only place to gain it. Yes, its the only place that will give you a piece of paper saying you have passed certain exams hence increasing your job opportunities immensly, but when you turn up to an interview and all you can say is numbers, no interpersonal skills, no experience, you are doomed. Why do you think employers stresss on experience, at times more so than what qualifications you have?

Some rappers are fools not because they dropped out of school but because they never had initiative not be fools. Tell you the truth some of these rappers i think are more wise than they may appear. Record labels tell them how to act, so perhaps they dumb themselves down.

Anyway there's nothing glamorous about being educated these days, matter fact has there ever been a time when it was? Yes there was, medievil times! Or at least thats the only instance i know of, correct me here if am wrong. Times when getting to learn stuff cost alot, and only the rich had the resources to be educated. But now theres all sorts of free information, you can even learn alot of shit on the internet for free. I can and probably will graduate using the internet as 50% of my resources and the other 50% from lecturers and lecture notes.

However am glad there's people out there changing that, even here at illmuzik, people like Fade, Classic, Swivel amonst many others.

But what I must stress again is that when i say education, I am not merely talking about having a piece of paper that states you are 'educated'. I know of many people that are self educated and sometimes say shit that you would never hear from someone that graduated. Even more, just watch Donald Trumps show, "The apprentice". Here they have a bunch of college grads battling it out with high school drop outs. You will see on many occasions how high school drop outs out perform college grads. It is not the case of the grads smashing the high school drop outs all the time, they are evenly matched with either sides not being handicapped at all.

Anyway too much typing so ill stop at it there.

I agree that "formal education" is not always the best marker of intellegence, but once you get to a certain higher levels it is. If you compared people with Phds in their field against those without one, they are much more informed. Also, many times people are more creative if they are passionate about something they are doing cause like you said they learn on their own. But isn't that a form of education? Overall formally educated people do have higher IQ scores. check them out if you have time..

Regarding being scholarly and educated in one's field it has ALWAYS been valued. How do you think we have all the nice trinkets and music production things we are able to enjoy? People just take the luxuries they have for granted and forget that someone educated invented or improved it. In the medieval times education was not highly esteemed by the masses until a bit later in the period because they couldn't read! Monks and monastaries/churches were the main avenues of learning until the printing press in 1453.. they disliked that the church dictated everything to them so eventually that is how the Protestant Reformation occured.. and people began to educate themselves so they could read.. So in the end being educated started becoming valued by laymen. Then in America it was also looked upon as being educated.. The founding fathers founding colleges, libraries and everything else.. why do you think their institutions still last? because they were educated on what they were doing.. how were they educated by reading the works of educated people like John Locke who read other "educated" people, the ancient Greeks. All the ancient civilizations more or less valued education. And that is the tradition we live with.. you may not think your educated but our literacy rates compared to back then were higher.. and I'd call anyone a fool who didn't want to learn more about the world and it's people. but than again ignorance is bliss and if that's your piece of pie, eat up.

Also, if a rapper is willing to take the fall and "play" dumb than to me they are dumb... There are some things you should never compromise. Being able to reason towards the goal of morality is one thing that makes us human. I'm not going to jump through some hoops just for a piece of food, but if others are willing to do that at the expense of others then yes, I think they are selfish greedy idiots..

nice points everyone.. i think college education has become stereotyped in this discussion by a few. like hardboiled i create all of my music (from beats to lyrics) and I am using my college education and work ethic that I constantly improve because of the classes demand to crossover into all aspects of my life including music production. my major is biotechnology and that has nothing to do with music but i have found that my work ethic as well as me understanding how i learn the best has most definetly helped me with my productions.

going to college is about learning and learning is never a waste of time!

it's unfortunate that this belief that college is a waste of time is in the hiphop community, especially in a time when the music is critically destructive to the black community as a whole. The getto mindstate can only be broken with knowedge, knowledge of self, knowledge of community, knowledge of the future, a new respect for women (family), and a new respect for humanity and life in general. These are all things you will not learn in a general college education but denouncing college education as a whole is such a dangerous element to an already failing system that something must be done about it if the future is anything but a failure for the community.
