Producing Advice

hey i spent the last few hours tapping in my beats and adding more living feel to the piece. If you don't mind check it out and let me know what you think. i have much training to go, but i think this has more feel than anything i have ever made. the link to the sample is in my sig "decisions" an it only 740 kb

Another thing worth mentioning is your production style may not be suited to the FL studio, yes u can make heat on almost anything but it is essential to find a tool that ur comfortable working with and that has the features u like and need because then you will be more motivated to learn how to use it.

i'm not using the controller to tap in my beats. It sounds like that's my problem; I've mainly used it for playing the melody. I don't know what quantizing is but i'll find out with the quickness.

an hoppa i see what you mean, I need to have more options than FL. It's tedious to always use that program. i never really thought up taking old breaks and chopping them up into a blend. Thx all for the info!

I think your just scratching the surface of the program. FL imports wav format so the sky is the limit to what your beats will sound like. You can also use soundfonts as well. If you copped an Mpc and worked with what comes out of the box you would be just as frustrated. It takes time to build drum kits and find synth sounds, one shots, synths that work for you.

I use fl studio and i'm startin to feel like i'm wasting my time trying to make my beats sound crisp and on human time (rather the fake programmed sound i usuially get) using fl.

I do use a midi controller, But what I'm asking Is are there any better programs that I could use in conjunction with the midi keyboard? I can borrow reason from a friend.. but i don't have much time and think twice before begining to try and figure it out (the instruction books are huge). But, if it's worth it i will.

Anyone have any suggestions? i've gotta fix my beats!

Tip #2: Giving up on your sequencer of choice will only make matters worse.

Tip #3: Having problems, making mistakes and finding answers to those problems is all you need to succeed in this business. Any business for that matter.

i'm not blaming anything worldcity (i noticed a lot of people think i'm a newbie) I bought flstudio back in feburary 2002 and mainly write but got into production so i can mold everything and own it. My problem is that i've began to consistly notice other peoples beats (especially those top people in the beat competition) are more fluid and professional, so i'm goin to school in this forum. Thanks everyone for the thorough information i've saved this forum so far in a word document for now and future reference.

It's not the program, it's the sounds you are putting into the programs. You gotta tweak with your sound sources, try different things, and take what you like from all of it.

I think its not about how long you produce or not even your age. Its all about how you flip your stuff. I have heard the track you wanted us to check... if i were you, i would speed up a little bit the tempo, it is too slow.. and an high hat or shake is missing too. Flipping your sample is not about looping only. I hear a lot of FL Sound in your beat... and everyone knows that a lot of FL sounds are a little bit cheezy. LIstening to others can only give you some inspiration to level up your game. In time, i hope you will find your sound.

More importantly listen to the greats im influenced by pete rock ,primo,marley marl u name it. I studied there style and listened to how they construct beats and incorparated it into my own style. That way it can spark ideas and give inspiration to make beats whether its with fruity ,an mpc, reason ,sp1200 whatever !!.

damn thats like exactly what i do. when i'm listenin to a song i like, i try and pull apart all the elements of that song. theres also usually one part of a song that sticks out and makes it as good as it is. the key is to figure what that part is and see how u can use the ideas of that for ur songs. its good to be creative and invent but u also can be creative on other peoples ideas.

Keep making trackz it will get better over time. Go out an get you a book on drum programming, and learn the basic scales and chord progression on the piano. Listen to your favorite producer, and try to replicate his techniques, then evolve it into your own. Everybody got they style from somewhere else.

most people dont have the talent to make good music no matter what they use,Or how hard they pratice. It just aint in them...

Dog I have to totally disagree. MOST people dont have the talent to make good music? Dog when your making beats practice makes perfect. Its not like sports, or art where you are born with it or gifted. Maybe when playing instruments people are sometimes born with it but still they have to practice. It might come easier to them but they do practice. But as far making beats. I dont think you are born with a gift of making beats its something that is practiced at and gradually perfected. I know cats that are totally not musically inclined or GIFTED but bang out some of the hottest shit. But they cant dance or nothing or play instruments. Thats Practice. I beg to differ brother.

Nahh newphew u gotta understand, just like some people can play ball better, and some people can draw better, some people have more musical abilittiy

No ofcourse pratice and determintation come into play, but u have to have the talent has a foundation in the first place. I dont care how hard u pratice, if u aint got it in you, u will not get to the level of a DRE or kanye. ITs a simple fact. some people are born with it.

I know cats that are totally not musically inclined or GIFTED but bang out some of the hottest shit. But they cant dance or nothing or play instruments. Thats Practice. I beg to differ brother.

Having the abilitity to compose or music and playin instraments and dancing totally differnt. Ive said this a million times, im a classical pianist, i knew cats in my piano school who could play the most complicated musical peices, but if u asked them to compose their own orginal melodody, they were lost.

Playing an instrament or dancing has nothing to do with compsititon abilittiy. What u fail to reailse is that your friends who bang out beats my not be tranied, but if they are as good as u say they are, THey have a natual abilitity or "ear" that cannont be taught/

Bottom line when it comes down to producing, you either got it or u dont.

AND yes i stand by what i said, 95% of the people out their do not have the abilitity to make good music. Just like 95% of people out their cant play in the NFL or draw well.
Its a god givin talent that can be developed with pratice and determination. But it is NOT something u can "learn"
