98% of the time for me its melody first drumz later.. its easier to mesh the drumz with the melody than vice-versa at least for me... i never really understood how cats coudl lay a drum pattern before they evenn knew what the melody was .. nevr made sense to me but then again evrybodys diffrent

thats spot on man! poor guy's got passion and desire and everyones telling him he's wasting his time!!! Dont listen to them your asking the right questions bro, plus your not yet satisfied with your beats (another good sign for you - means you got standards and are searching for somthing to improve - good man) Try to listen to your beats then some you like by a pro and ask yourself how they sound different, write a list, itll probably have stuff like.....
1. my drums sound too stiff
2. the bass is unclear and flabby
3. the lead sounds are too thin.....ect

then look for ways to change the problem areas. or post me and ill try to help out. keep asking questions and try to watch and copy others technique on the keys. record a chord proggression and then loop it and freestyle over the top...this will help you get some fluidity in your hands.

remember hiphop beats mostly arent pretty like alot of music, learn the rules and then throw em out. Grit and grunt needs to be the basis with occasional flourishes of beauty here and there.

haha dre isnt tht amazing of a producer he just has a lot of cash so he can actually afford a turntable and other stuff that makes beats and he can actually go digging. name one good track he made (by himself) that didnt feature a sample... uhhhh didnt think so. its all bout the cash sampling doesnt take a genius just someone with patience (and basic rhythm)

Are you serious? That was the about the most naive post ive ever read...

First of all, where do you think dre GOT the money that he has now? Did you think he started out independently wealthy or something?

Secondly, You could have all the gear in the world and still be the wackest beatmaking wannabee ever. Give dre fruityloops or something real real basic and i guarantee you his skills would still blow you out of the water.

Third, watch out and stop bashing sampling. Im sure you realize that sampling is the roots and basis of hip hop. It takes a great deal more skill than many non-samplers give it credit for, epecially to do it well.

Im not even that big of a dre fan, but i think you should get your knowledge game up a bit before you go saying thigns like that.

iom getting tired of defending sampling.
