Yes, you can do all that.

To dump each track separately onto your PC, you would just need to mute the other tracks while playing the track you want to dump. The tape needed for it would just be a regular cassette. And yeah, he'll be able to hear what he previously recorded while doing voice overs. Just like a computer sequencing program, except it's a Portastudio. :)

I love that thing. The only thing you should know about the tapes is that once you record something onto it using the tascam, you wont be able to play it in a normal tape player. Because the tascam divides the tape into 4 channnels and a normal tape player cant read 4 channels. So the only way to record what you have recorded onto it, is to record the main outs into a Computer or a stereo tape recorder.

But its definitely worth it. If you only see it for $150, check on ebay, cuz you can get the 424MKII for $150 used which is a lot better.

That's due to normal tape bleeding. There's nothing you can really do about that because don't forget - you're using a regular cassette tape and splitting that little tiny width of tape into 4 tracks. So naturally other tracks will bleed onto others.

Yeah I guess so. But still, it's cool to be able to record easily like that instead of having to lug your PC around. Plus it's a challenge too because you have to bounce tracks, etc.

Make sure that you get a casette head cleaner from wal-mart before you get rid of it. Those really work real good. And they cant be more then $3.00.

Do NOT get a "regular cassette tape" for that recording. Get a 60 to 100 minute Maxell XLIIS tape to get the best recording possible. The shorter the tape length, the better. Do NOT get a "regular cassette tape".

Thats what i use (XLII's). I tried Master-Copy tapes a couple times, but they dont really sound as good after the 10th time recording something on it.

Inspecta,
I see how youd be mad about hearing the audio bleed on a casette recorder, but thats something you hafto give up when you want the grimeyness. Listen to the last track on Wu-Tang's 36 Chambers. When Raekwon goes accapella you can hear the beat in the back. And that aint the headphones, im pretty sure its the analog bleed.
