alot of the time when you hear those perfect overdubs it is a result of extensive editing. I mean someone sat there and visually lined up the words. or it could be that the performer has done an excelent job. im not sure quite what your asking. but the concept is basically to get the artist to perform the vocal track another time while listening to their lead vocals, either in part or dubing the whole thing. this is usually eq'd differently and mixed at a lower volume. you will want to get the artist to perform this as acurately as possible and if most of it is good with only a few mistakes then go back and edit those parts or get the artist to re-record just those parts again. you can record several backing tracks and pan them and eq them and mix them differently to create what is called a "bed."

if you are talking about overdubbing a rapper, after the first take the artist just plug in on certain parts on the second take.
if you are talking about singing the it becomes a little more complicated., expecially with the chorus. puting together vocals in a chorus is like playing notes that form chords. it all have to be in same key. you will have to experiment in order to get the hang of it.

Just layering down 2nd vocal on a new track. I sometimes use a subtle amount of HP filtering without Q/Resonance to take off the lower freq, then turn the volume a bit down on it. If it's not properly sung/rapped simply do it again untill satisfied. I do mention the person in question to pay attention to tone, in that his 2nd voice does not go off key with the lead vocal.
