I was shocked to hear this. I came to work today and my homie gave me the info. i thought he was just fucking me. He told nme to go to MTV.com and check it out. Low and behold my crazy brotha from anotha had passed. The thing that I read that he was in the studio when it happened. He was on his way back, on the right path.

ODB will be missed! This brotha can't be, won't be replaced!

This is the first time I shed a tear in a long time. No one could toe the line between genius and insanity as gracefully as Ol' Dirty. In a wierd sense, he was the father I never had. It's a good thing for the clan that they did a 9-member concert right before this happened.

I HATE THIS YEAR.

Damn. I was just at the Wu reunion concert on friday. Everybody was there except Dirt. Once everyone did their solo joints, people started chanting "ODB! ODB!", but he wasn't there. Shit is terrible. That crazy muthafucka will be missed...

He's never been one of my favourite Wu members but regardless of my musical preferences it's still sad to see anyone leave this earth at such a young age.

At least, as Formant pointed out, he seemed to live the life...the rockstar way.

I'm Just Saying That We Shouldnt Be All Like, He Was The Best Freestyler, Or He Paved The Way For This And That And Then Forget About Rap Poineers Like Big L. All Im Saying Is The Dude Was His Own Demise And He Didnt Set Any Type Of Example Or He'd Be Legit And Still Alive. I Just Dont Want People Looking At Odb As The Example Of How To Kick Off Their Rap Career.

Ol' Dirty Bastard was a modern day Yorick.

He wasn't the best freestyler.. in fact, he usually recited previously used rhymes.
He didn't pave the way for much.
He wasn't his own demise... Life is a cancer, we all are ticking away. Our death began with our separation from the womb.
No... he didn't set many examples.
No he wasn't the best father figure. Or father.

No one said he did any of this. The man was great for the fact that he could allow all of the people that could NOT experiment with drugs/alcohol/sex to experience those things... His music was a portal into that segment of your brain that you are just too damn frightened of to visit.
He was an absolute legend in the fact that he would do whatever he felt appropriate at the moment, which usually WASN'T. He did what everyone of us wanted to do at some point.

WHO among us hasn't wanted to ask the District Attorney "Do I Make You Horny", and then fall asleep in court at the stand??

Of course people love a court jester. Everyone encouraged his misogynic mayhem and chaos. Why not encourage Russel Jones to be that fool that we all want to be? It's better to laugh at his actions and allow him to take the fall, than to step up and guide him. Yeah, I know he was a grown-ass man, and he probably wanted the attention. But so what? Where was RZA when ODB needed guidance? In fact... where was RZA when Poetic of Gravediggaz was on his deathbed? Anyway, point being, he was one of the least ethical people I could imagine. SO FUCKING WHAT? Richard Prior, Jimmy Hendrix, etc.. etc... same story.

Ol' Dirty Bastard was the closest person I could imagine to being free. Locked up or not.

By the way, Big L is NOT a rap "Pioneer". That's like saying M. Jordan is one of basketball's greatest founding fathers.

the fuck are u talking about?
that was the single most dumb assed remark ever on the pages of these forums.
BIG L founded the bling bling rap style, and he made Jay-Z.
Michael Jordan bought back the slam dunk, made a dynasty, dominated with his style of play, and gave basketball its bling bling.
dont come in here like michael jordan aint a pioneer cause this and that or big l aint a rap pioneer because this and that.
if u make it in the game, whether that be in the nba or 106 and park u are a pioneer and an example.
even if michael jordan average 5 points a game and 10 turnovers, just the fact that he made it to the nba makes him a pioneer.
odb aint no michael jordan he's more like a denis rodman.
he did some crazy shit, people laughed, people got offended, people liked him cause of his entertainment value.
he rapped and didnt make sense, he was wanted by the law, and his on stage antics made people think he needed help.
i dont see michael jordan getting hunted down by the law.
imo big l dying had/ has more of an impact on the rap game then odb dying.

I'm not gonna get on here and debate with you in THIS thread (of all threads) so I'll make it short and sweet.

1) Pick up a book. Please. Go and learn the difference between INNOVATOR and PIONEER. jesus. Big L was good, no doubt. he could flow seamlessly, yeah yeah. All good. comparing ODB to Big L (whathafuk?) is like comparing Thelonious Monk to Ray Charles. It just doesn't make any sense...

i see where you're coming from. you don't like odb. he wasnt positive. no. he wasnt. that's why we have Common Sense. He does all that. ODB did what ODB did. and that was whatever the fuck he wanted. so what you didn't agree?

SOOOOOO i guess old Rae Carruth is a pioneer also. right? in what? FUCKED UP MURDERS???

you know what? Shame on me for wasting illmuzik thread space debating with bobo the trained chimp. shame on me for even trying to debate this with you. shame on me for thinking I could come back to this site thinking the Darwinian proceess would have filtered out the ignorant in these forums. My bad.

I'll let you do you MikeLabz. while I'm gone, why don't you work on that Mathematically Divisible beat...

I still love you man. you still coming to my slumber party Friday? Don't forget to bring the marshmallows and jelly.
PEACE illmuzik.. love yall. Catch you'ze in a few months... Separation is good for the relationship sometimes.
by the way... Mikey brought it to my attention that we need a new smiley... the one for dildo.
