Obsession with Gangsta.

Why do you guys think the hip-hop community is obsessed with gangsta; the monikers, the styles, the lyrics, and the lifestyles?
I'm doing a paper on devotionalism in hip-hop and I was wondering what you guys thought of worship in hip-hop?
I believe the majority of the hip-hop community worship gangstas old and new and it is detrimental to the community. It is almost a religion to "keep it real" in a gangsta sense. Just wanted you guys to think about it and maybe help me out.

people who are scared and don't have a clue what to do about it usuially flock together in packs and feed off of own security of "a crew having your back" and that trickles down to little kids in the suberbs who are scared themselves and hence feed off the inner city kids issues.

the only thing to fear is fear its'self

because it sells and the record companies gonna push whateva keeps em caked up. And its just a cycle now from one wave of hip-hop listeners to the next. when you're a kid growing up around or in a earshot of so-called "gangsta shit" these are the kids who are prone to become the keep it real promoters. Then it becomes cool to others who didn't have the same background to chime in. Its just a fucked up mentality.

I find that most of the people who are obessed with "gansta" are people who have no idea of the realitity of that enviroment. they look at it like a thrill , like a rollercoaster they want to get on....

Most people who have seen and lived it first hand (myslef) and lost countless friends find nothing glamrious about it.

gangsters have many reasons for getting into gangs.

Lack of family/real friends and the enviroment in which they surround themselves makes them want to be "gangsta"

Not to mention society glorifies that badass attitude, along with the mainstream.

It's really sad, some kids are just thrown into that way of life with no choice.

i agree w/ u 100% man, well said. i mean, it's mostly men lovin this shit and honestly w/ white boys girls always seem to like the tough guy u know? nobody wants to be/with a weak guy- so ppl try to be hard as possible. Same reason ppl wanna be bullies and jocks.

plus, goin off class's comments, it's not the real thing. Ppl dont know shit about hte real thing. i mean, i dont but i dont want to. i understand that it's a vicious cycle, and somethin a lotta ppl come to regret... but i mean it's easy to talk about holdin a gun or even just holdin a gun, wearin ur hat sideways, puttin on baggy clothes, "mean muggin," tryin to get the LOOK... ppl dont have to actually live the life they can live the "fantasy" and that's part of why it's so disgusting- just perpetuating the situation for the ppl who really DO live it

Nothing Wrong with Rappin bout your Enviorment or Shit youve done in life cuz you cant help where you came up .

But its really Stupid when u got all these Rappers with big Pictures of Scarface , AL Capone , Lucky Luciano , And Pablo Escobar on there T-shirt especially Knowing that they set many Clothing Trends in the hiphop Community . So dont get madd when you see the White boy from the Suburbs Wearing a Shirt with Scarface and a Kilo Of Cocaine in front of him on it , its the Rappers fault for Puttin them on that Icon Status and making the youth feel they need one of these shirts to fit in .

I'll tell you one thing, every rapper out there claim all this gangsta shit on songs are breaking a real gagsta's #1 rule: Real killers move in SILENCE. Soooooooooo they either dumb as fuck or theyre full of shit. 99% of the time i'd have to go with the second option.

The bad guy is considered cool. That's just pop-culture and not a hip-hop phenomenon.

The "thug mentality" that some people try to emulate sucks as fuck, but that's a social issue and not a hip-hop thing.

I'll break some shit down.

Wether its Hip Hop or just the next guy,,,its a male thing. It really is. Every man needs to be dominant and better then the next. It infused in our DNA since cave man days,,lol. It all goes to evolution IMO. I think life is about recreating for the species to survive. Survival of the fittest in a sense. The dominant man always got the cave-woman and got to "create". Ieeewww. Imagine back then? Anyways, its a machismo that every man needs to prove he has in one way or another. Us as stupid ass men, think women really think a woman finds that attractive. Some do, but we do what we do with them and thats that. Because to a man,,,life is about women and money. Sex and greens. This is what the fascination is to me. It a nutshell anyway.
