Oasis (the band) for you UK/European heads...

1) I know Coldplay is British. What I meant was that they are a "newer" band that may be able to fill a stadium- but they don't risk it.

2) This is NOT about festivals. Oasis sold out Wembley in a couple minutes and it was solely THEIR gig. It wasn't a festival. They sell out stadiums like Maine Rd., Wembley, etc.

Korn can't, Metallica is an older act, Jonas and Hannah Montana don't even try. It's more reasonable for them to book an indoor arena for two nights in a row rather than book a stadium.

Here's what I'm talking about regarding Oasis' live shows (where they are the headliner and it's NOT a festival):

a) Wembley Stadium 2000:


b) Manchester (allegedly NOT a festival) - another Maine Rd. show:


c) Maine Rd. Stadium 96:


I know their Knebworth FESTIVAL show was huge, but that's not a stand-alone gig. All I know is their agent must make a TON of money.

Sure, they ripped off the Beatles - I would have too if it was reaping that much success for me.

Hey god, i understand what your saying but its england, native english...the other european countries have stadiums bookt for the national artist, really stupid shit but they sell out 11 times a year, talking Ajax Arena in amsterdam. In a way oasis in the UK is major folkore hehe, you know one of the top earners last year from concert income was andre rieu...This dude is a local from around my place http://www.andhranews.net/Intl/Web/50-42.asp This is basicaly what you're dealing with hehe he is above coldplay...

On the subject of Oasis, I read in the paper today that their biggest rivals...Blur upstaged them yet again at some show very recently. Out of the blue they appeared. It was kept top secret. Looks like Blur are back at it again. Im pretty sure at their peak they were filling stadiums too. But I wasnt much of a fan so dont speak from experience, but I figure if they can top Oasis in a chart battle, they must command quite a fanbase.

Yeah, I think you're right about unity behind a big national act.

I think the US is diluted too much musically - there are too many demographics competing for the same target audience. Artistically, this is awesome. But it's rare to find a new act that can cross many demographics that can also fill a stadium.

Artists may be able to sell records, like Kanye or 50 - but they can't sell out a stadium.

It looks like Oasis has Wembley Stadium booked for three nights. That's huge (look at Coldplay - they have Jay-Z as an opening act: http://www.pollstar.com/resultsVenue.aspx?ID=118108&SortBy=Date)

It's not Wembley Arena, which is the indoor arena - that's a different venue (listed here: http://www.pollstar.com/resultsVenue.aspx?ID=76444&SortBy=Date&SearchBy=wembley arena)

I'm impressed by the moneymaking off the large venues. Simple songs=money.
