the origin of his name is not in dispute, it's his alleged history in the criminal world and his long denied and finally grudgingly admitted job as six (c.o.), as well as, his alleged involvement with a gang is what people are focusing on.

both sides have a point but to me it still boils down to someone not coming clean. it's not that he had a job, or, for some, a job as a c.o., it's that the denial makes it seem like it was something to be ashamed of (especially the job, or in plies case, college) which by extension paints a picture that those in hip hop and the black community feel the same way (sometimes the argument made by some against those who aren't happy with him denying part of his past long after it was exposed), when that's not the issue.

no doubt, some will have a problem with a former c.o. and people will always question the 'criminal pasts' of anybody rapping about it, but imo, that's minor to the sheer amount of denial and then posturing. i never really listen to his stuff so no harm no foul, for others that like his stuff, it's up to them whether they support him or not.

Agreed.

What I want to know is why we (as a hip hop movement) decided that negativity was the cool thing (see reggae or jazz or something for alternative topics [love]). Why can't people be lying about actually going to college, maybe the kids will have a different view on the things they wanna grow up and do..

Not that I think that rap music will make you a "gangster" .. I just found that interesting

Marketing scheme.

Labels sell "gangster rappers" as a "successful Item" i.e be like them and get the bitches, money, cars, and whateva. Youth see it as role models to be successful.

They could change it if they wanted, but it sells. Once it stops selling then the next thing will be the hot item.

it's a little too easy to say the labels. fact, dudes have always tried to be tough and let people know they're even tougher than they are (regardless if they are or not). another one is that people always want to have an interesting life story. it would be just as annoying if i hear yet another story of 'rags to riches' 'changed my life around' but others love it.

ross told the story, he says his story, himself, pointing the finger anywhere else absolves him, if you think he has anything to be guilty about.

i'm not a fan of the idea that most rappers are lying about their criminal pasts, look at the stats for young men, regardless of socio-economics, race, and regardless of post secondary education, shit happens on a large scale. dudes can be easily exaggerating, dudes putting in years of steady work on the streets will exaggerate, same with those mr. bigs and mr. cartels, human nature and an occupational hazard. adding to the confusion is that from jump, once dudes got deals which meant advances and cash some either upped their game or joined it.

i don't bother tryin' to figure out who's talkin' truth, stretching it (for whatever reason) or tellin' flat out lies. i don't pay attention to dudes from who evers neighborhood because if you were doing anything, you have to have those that don't like you and some will be that dude in your own crew/block/etc. it doesn't take much to get into the game, but it takes somethin' to stay and make somethin' out of it for yourself and avoid the dangers.

anyways, i personally don't care how you got here only how well you spit, your creativity, your flow and the music you're rappin over. but if you claim something, good or bad, and get caught lie telling or exposed, i'll definitely think twice while giving kissing my teeth and giving a serious cut eye.
