Ok so as I alluded to in the other thread I had a crazy bitch went nuts story with another artist (a writer)
So this writer contacts me and wants me to compose a theme song that she can use to get funding for her film. And of course for free. On this note, I actually disagree with god (the illmuzik member, not the deity) on this point. Free work has made me lots of money in the past, and has connected me with paying clients, discussion for another thread....
At any rate, so I am thinking about the viability of the film and if I should get involved. This chick calls me like twice and day and wont leave me alone, she also likes about every freaking post of mine if facebook. Of course she promises that I will make all this money when the films makes it big (of course as you all know, most projects don't) and my BS radar is going off. Also she wrote "lyrics" to said theme song and gosh they are not very good and they tell the ENTIRE STORY in the lyrics. On top of that, film theme songs rarely have lyrics. Also I get the feeling that she has no clue what she is getting into, and that is ok. But I kind of want to clue her in. So she calls...and calls...and finally I send her this email
"ok so after mulling over it a few days, here are my thoughts. First off, I appreciate your passion. That really goes along way with me. My concerns are as follows, after discussing this projects with several of my director and camera person friends that I have worked with on projects in the past (one for example works on NYPD Blue, and another director makes all the TV commercials for Rockstar games, IE the Max Payne commercial that you have probably seen on TV) and have both worked in independent film (as I assume this will be an indy) They feel that the budget needed to complete the film would range between 500k and 750k. Do you think that level of funding is possible? I would like to think so, but boy I have a feeling that would be a major undertaking. Second I have some concerns of the theme music as it is currently described. In my humble opinion to complete your goal of having a piece of media that can sell the film, you would need something with strong emotional connection and both high and low intensity. The current lyrics are more of a narrative then a theme. I can picture them as a country song, but I think it will be a tough sell as a theme. For the most part theme music has little to no lyrics, and VERY strong emotional connections. For example, think of footloose. The song has a strong connection in your mind to the plot of the film, but zero of the lyrics actually relate to the plot. Also think of the Rocky films, you can just hear “eye of the tiger” playing just thinking about them. But again the lyrics are not in narrative form only emotional connection. Also look at the current trailer for the Great Gatsby
in the opening the director Baz Luhrmann (who is probably the most musical director alive, he did moulin rouge and strictly ballroom. ) Uses Kanye West’s and Jay-Z’s track “No Church in the Wild” and here are the only lyrics heard
“I stand by you, walk through the fire
Your love is my scripture”
then the trailer busts in to Jack White wailing “Love is Blindness” and that is about it.
Also, I think that to sell the idea of a film it will take a very strong visual. Maybe it would make sense to self fund a short 3-5 minute film and use that as marketing. Build some amazing visuals and music, draw people in emotionally.
So to sum up
#1 I don’t think the current written lyrics will meet your goal.
#2 I think you will need a strong visual presentation to sell the idea.
Hope that helps, and I hope none of this is offensive I am very blunt person but to be honest that is why other artist like working with me. On another note, it would be fun to get the film off the ground. I would love to score the entire thing and do all the foley, sfx etc.

SO she calls me and leaves me this ranting voice mail about how her lyrics do match the story and I have not read the book so I wouldn't know (no idea why she thinks this is my point as it is the EXACT OPPOSITE!)She also says I had no right to talk with my friends in NYC about it, of course she has a public facebook page about the film. And on and on with nonsense that is not even my point.
She calls back like ten minutes later and I answer..
She says she is making the song anyway, and it will be a huge hit once the movie is out and I don't need to worry about it any more. She says the lyrics match the book perfect and if someone reads the book the lyrics make sense, of course I reply "but your target audience has not read the book" This falls on deaf ears...
WOW, so I told her sincerely that I hope the film is a huge success and I wish her the best but I am the wrong guy for this project. Within a few hours she defriends me on facebook and that is what.
HOLY CRAP. Some people. Honestly, had she been calmed and discussed my points I was temped to do the work. But I cant work with someone who freaks out when there is the slightest disagreement.
PS oh she also said the famous line. All my friends say that lyrics fit the book and are fantastic. Yup I am sure your friends and mom all love it. BYE
