Let me step in for a second. I'm half black, half white. I'd say i have a fairly unbiased view on the matter. That being said,

Nigga and Nigger both stem from the word Negro, which means Black (literally, spanish and a few other languages). People that go off on this whole "Well, there's white niggas too blah blah" Shut up. You're stupid. Why aren't there any Black Honkeys? Ever heard of a black cracka? Give that shit up. If you're white and you use the word, you're stupid.

If you're black and you use that word, you're stupid AND you're enabling people of other races to use the word (so long as you drop the "er" and replace it with an "a" of course), thus causing more stupidity. Is it cool if a Puerto Rican dude says it? What about Fat Joe saying "Me and my niggas don't dance, we just pull up our pants blah blah"... Well, I guess since he said "Me and my niggas" like it's a term of endearment, PLUS he did the nigger-to-nigga conversion, it's all good, right?

Well, if it's cool to say nigga (thanks, Chapelle and Aaron McGruder) then it's pretty racist in my opinion for everyone EXCEPT white people to be able to say it.

Either everyone can say it, or no one can say it. Pick one, you double-standard embracing bastards.

I think it's a 50/50 Senate type argument personally. We live in America with a history that transformed the word negro to the derogotory N word. So if you live in America you know the difference between a raceaphobic and someone in the family(meaning uncomfortable white people and thos ethat know something). Personally I think that no-one should use any slang form of the word based on history and the fact that so many people were killed and that's the last word they heard. On the other hand if you've seen enough of the truth, no matter what race you are, then you will feel and fight for the truth to the death with your sisters and brothers. So it's really all about perspective. Racism is Iggnorant Period and the solution is this is not merely Black and White

i think it's pretentious for white people to take the whole "slavery is over, i didn't personally take part in it so i can say it" bullshit view. racism is still very alive in america, its just very subdued and subconscious. it comes out in shit like this...it comes out even in the body language that your average white person starts to exhibit when around black people...such as closed shoulders etc. There have been studies done where people are given a split second series of questions to associate good and bad with black and white and the overwhelming majority of people who have no overt racist attitude scored relatively low on this test (associating black with bad). because of my ignorant forefathers, it's been engrained into our minds and now its a regular thing...whether it ends in "a" or "er" it still stems from the same hateful word that ignorant people used to emotionally and psychologically cut the african-american population down. it's pretentious and stupid for white people to think they have a right to say it just because they don't mean it in that way. thats like expecting the person you said it to (or people overhearing it) to read your mind. regardless of how you mean it, the reality is that my pasty predescessors used up all rights to say it...the impact is far too great.
