So I went over to Guitar Center today to look @ new headphones.... OF course I start wandering around the pro audio area...come across this lovely piece of equipment called Traktor Kontrol S4..... Now I've been considering getting a turntable and a mixer to do my own cuts, but..........I just don't have the room...However looking @ this...I feel that I can find a way to make this work with my current desk, thanks to my lovely wireless keyboard. Now I do have a guitar center credit card (the devil, btw), I would like to buy it....but it's a HUGE cost...$899... Now they do offer 15% off if you use your card, which is about $135 off the cost....

Does anyone have one or know someone who has one? if so...any feedback on it would be awesome.

I say DON'T do it...it's impossible to TRUELY imitate scratching like you hear the "better" scratchers/DJ's do on turntables or CD decks. The wheels are simply too small. It is capable of doing some decent scratches (like you see on youtube videos) but it's not worth it imo. You need atleast a 7" platter minimum.

Get 2 of these and a mixer... http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/NDX800/

Which will cost a lot more money... Just two of them are 800, not including the mixer.....I might want to start doing shit with more than one deck......plus I would have to buy traktor to set up with Maschine, as well....but I could always record into Pro tools...

I'm going to look @ the Numark next time I go to GC. I'm going to try it out.....being that you're experienced...

I'm just at a point where I don't have the room for all of that, where the Kontrol S4 is all in one......I'm looking to sell a couple other beats to this local dude...definitely help pay for some of it...plus some other things I'm looking to make money on... #hustlehard

But I like what I see with the numark according to the videos...I think I'm going to swing by that spot before work on Monday and check them out for a bit.

Edit: Every review I've seen of S4 has been good......Like I said....I'll give Numark a shot...any one else here have an opinion on it?

Do as you wish but if you guys go with 4" platters, I promise you'll be disappointed once you've reached the physical limit that they will do. You gotta remember that since everything has gone digital, 98% of our production gear makes the job easier. So when we see a video of someone doing some above average ish, we automatically think we can achieve the same results. Look at dp's video closer...dude spends about 45 secs (if that...) actually scratching and the rest is pushing buttons and sliders. He only does 3 different scratches. But by the end of the video, you think he's done something dope...lol, smh.

Here's the logic...dope scratching is all about making precise movements and manipulations of your platters, with a full size platter you you have a certain amount of room for error, now make your platter smaller and what do you get? A smaller amount of room for error. Trust, bigger is better in this case, just ask any DJ that went from turntables to CD Decks (7'inch platters), not to mention trying to go down to 4".

What it all boils down to is "how good do you wanna be with it?" If having the ability to do mediocre scratches (at best) is enough for you then Traktor will suffice but if you want to do some really wicked ish, don't waste your money on it. Get something that will do what you need. I'm not talking about becoming a DMC Champ either, I'm talking about having the ability to do some good, solid scratching.
