anything put on the wall should be not directly on the wall but some airspace between it and the wall (i.e. 5 inches suspended by something. that way it actually does somewhat what it's supposed to do. carpet can be problematic, if you have the time google absorption coefficients to get just a little info on what you might be doing when introducing treatments, it's more complex than that but it's a start.

also reduce the amount of reflections from monitors/speakers and desk. treat the front differently than the sides and back, even when introducing diffusers, limit the amount of difference on the two side walls, having them drastically asymmetrically creates monitoring problems.
