Musical Inspirations & Influences

Hey guys, I was just wondering, who or what are some of your musical inspirations and influences? Like, most of us are in love with hip hop music, but do you find yourself having a vibe that is found in other types of music? For instance, me, I love electronica music such as trance, ambient, and experimental music. An example of an artist that I am absolutely in love with, well, two are: BT @ www.btmusic.com & Jan Hammer @ www.janhammer.com. In fact, my favorite musicians are not hip hoppers, LOL, they are U2!

I grew up in a household that played all kinds of music, so I listened to Sting & The Police to Mahalia Jackson. However, I always felt so at home with hip hop and today, when I am producing, because of my love for other types of music, it comes into my hip hop joints. On that note though, do you DABBLE in other styles of music? I want to do some electronica, soundtrack, and new age tracks!

My first musical influence was Ray Charles; he was the first musician that I listened to. I listen to a lot of R&B/Soul, Jazz and classic Rock. Miles Davis has also been influential.

I've actually been influenced quite a bit by a lot of international music and I try to bring that feel across in my music.

Still, I don't have any particular desire to produce tracks in other genres.

Come to think of it, I'd love to produce tracks for an interesting alternative artist. That would be a new musical venture for me.

im not even gonna lie, i dont have any deep musical influences other than hip hop. all i ever listen to is the beatnuts, lil brother type stuff, smiff and wessun, old mobb stuff, and the occasional weird dub reggea type stuff.

You ever listen to The Spinners? Check out "Rubberband Man" - that is one of my favorites. I also LOVE Hall & Oates, they give me some good vibes for writing and some musical ideas.

My main influence is late 60's/70 soul, from the vocal groups Grafik's talking about, Marvin Gaye, Minnie Riperton, Stevie Wonder etc... plus some jazz funk heros like Roy Ayers, Patrice Rushen... in fact the group that influenced me the most may have been the Jackson 5, i was listening to them since i'm 12.
Recently, i've been listening to a lot of 60's pop band though... The Zombies, Colin Blunstone, The Beach Boys (pet Sounds is a must), the Beatles, Honeybus etc... i guess it helps developing my sound too...

I need new influences. Erica doesnt matter and you dont have to answer but whats you ethnicity having been raised around so much different music and now settling with hiphop?

^^^ yea, they won 6th place in the eurovision song contest (the biggest european music event), which was yesterday..and actually they are really good and talented musicians..this song was kinda protest to this shitty eurovision contest..their leader said it took 1 year to come up with this song..

I'm black. I have Brasilian heritage, so I was always intouch with those roots. I grew up in a diverse family, you know, traveling a lot, all kinds of different types of friends, different ethnicities in my family AND I watched A LOT of TV and MOVIES as a kid!

MANTAS: ONE YEAR? Ahaha, I saw the group that won EUROVISION. Now I can see why they are pissed. LOL

Erica thats pretty cool I listen to lots of stuff as well and have liked U2 since they got to the states....Course I havent bought any of their records since Sunday Bloody Sunday but I like them!!!
I have been on a wings of an Angel thing lately listenin to Jazz in traffic in the morning.
Good stuff wish I could sample it while drivin lots of good stuff.
Beatles here too, funny how influentual their music is.
