well, i am organizing my drum collection for the guy who is buying my MPC......and i kind of like the drums i have collected over the last year, i have a fairly big collection from various sources and i was wondering if i will be able to somehow use these on cubase sx wheni get it. will i need a sampler to do this? or would i be able to just import the .wav files?

Hey,

1. You can import the wav files by inserting them directly into an audio track. You won't be able to trigger them, though, you'll have to arrange them on the tracks manually.

2. To remedy this, you can get a software sampler and simply load the Akai program into it and trigger them with your MIDI controller, just like you would on the MPC. This is probably the easiest route for you.

So, instead of saving out the wav files, you should probably just save the Akai programs. If you later need the wav files, there are programs which can help you do this.

Take care,

Nick

ok..... so the program itself, and not the individual hits? all of my drums were individual samples, not sample disks or anything, if that changes anything. (it doesnt look like it, but you never know)

anyhow they are saved as programs, so i should be fine. would sampletank work for this? it can convert akai s1000 and s3000 files..... but the mpc 2000 is in s2000 format, isnt it? soooo..........

does cubase sx have a step sequencer for the audio tracks? i always do my drums in step, so this would help. if not, i can always use the midi route and be fine.

anyhow thanks, i am always worried that you would be tired of my endless cubase/pc questions, but you always answer them no problem!

Hey,

No problem, I learn a lot by answering questions. There are only a few Cubase users here...

Yes, the programs. A program contains both the wav data and the sample information, like key assignment, velocity, filters, envelopes, LFO's, amp, pitch, etc.

I don't know if Sampletank can import programs from the MPC. As long as you can export programs in the formats Sampletank can read, you're good to go. You'll have to look it up in the MPC manual.

Cubase has a step sequencer, but only for MIDI. Seeing how an Akai program is in essence a 'synth patch' which you load into a sampler, you interact with it as a MIDI object and not as audio.

What you would do is load an instance of a softsynth/sampler (like Sampletank or Kontakt) into a VSTi track in Cubase, load the Akai program into the softsynth/sampler then write a bunch of MIDI notes into the track which trigger the Akai program. When you hit play on the transport bar, the notes get sent to the softsynth/sampler and they get triggered, just like if you had written notes into a track on the MPC.

When you are done writing the song and want to mix it down to a big audio file, you simply go to File>Export Audio and Cubase 'renders' everything into one file. This file will have your sounds from the Akai program all sequenced...you can then burn this to a cd and listen to it on a cd player.

Take care,

Nick

Don't know if I understood this correct but if you need to convert Akai S1000, S3000 files etc either .wav, halion, .sf2 format etc, Chicken Systems Translator is the program to use.

Hey,

We're hoping that he won't have to convert anything! If he's lucky, whatever program he uses will import is Akai program directly without having to convert it. I'm sure that the MPC can save out in either s1000/3000 files, it would be really really stupid of Akai to not include that feature.

Well, can Cubase do this? I know that Reason can with it's addtionally program ReLoad but I don't know about Cubase.

Hey,

Cubase can't, but if he loads a softsynth/sampler like Kontakt or Samplitude, he can.
