Mixers/Mic Amps?

Ok..I'm finnally getting my studio together...It's all based on my computer. I wanna get some kind of Shure brand mic, I got some descent noise-cancelling headphones, working on getting a keyboard...but anyway.

I do not understand the purpose of a mixer? Do I really need one? I plug my mic directly into my computer and mess with the recordings in Cool Edit pro, so why should I consider a mixer? or mic amps?

Well, you're gonna need some sort of pre-amp. where do you expect to plug the mic into on your computer? Unless you have a soundcard with a built in pre-amp. Also, any preamps you have built into your computer are most likely pieces of shit.

Best bet if you wanna keep it simple is get an mbox, or if you dont want to run pro tools and prefer cool edit, get some sort of firewire interface. MOTU, or M-audio or something...


As far as a mixer, unless you have multiple sound sources you probably wont need it....

Check out da M-Audio Mobile Pre. To be honest i dont fuck wit mixers cause i had nothin but trouble wit em but i dont need them anyways cause i use a track recorder as a mixer and for recording.

I plug my microphone into a standard microphone jack on my soundcard. I think my microphone quality is fine. I'm just more confused on the equipment I need for my studio. I don't really know what a mixer or a mic amp is for, hence I don't know why I would need it. If all an amp does is make a microphone louder, and a mixer only mixes tracks; I can just increase the volume of the recordings and mix them onto the beat in Cool Edit Pro.

well if you're satisfied with your microphone quality with how it is then you dont need to worry about getting a preamp. You wont have that decent quality recordings though. Anything using a stock computer soundcard wont be the greatest for actual vocal recording. You can get by though if you plan on upgrading later its what most people do.
