My question would be...how do you plug in a decent mic to your PC's soundcard? would you have to purchase like an adapter for this? and what software would be good for recording, mixing, and mastering? cheap or expensive. also what would be a good mic under $200? thanks for all the help. There's a small jack slot at the back of your pc for a mic. For software, Cool Edit is probably your best bet.

Most if not all professional mics don't have the right jack that would
fit in the mic jack to your computer. You can buy a small adapter for
the mic that plugs into your computer at a radioshack or some place
similar. As far as recording and editing, any version of Cool Edit is
pretty helpful or any program you see for the same price as CE should
be quality.

Hey,

A good vocal recording mic should have an XLR plug and require a preamp to boost the signal to line level before sending it into the line input of your soundcard.

Condenser mics are very popular for vocals, you can get a nice cheap russian Oktava condenser for about $150. You will also need a preamp, a lot of mixers have preamps in them, you can plug your mic into it and send the amped signal to the card.

For recording anything, it's more important to have a good soundcard than it is to have a good program...a good program is more important for editing audio, not for recording it.

Take care,

Nick
