had a session a couple weeks ago. i admit, i should have taken more control over the session, but i didn't. because of that, i ended up mentally drained. everything was unorganized, and in disarray. i had 3 dudes wanting to rap on 3 different tracks, verses weren't memorized, 3 different concepts on the same song, everyone taking cigarette breaks at different times....it was a total f'ing disaster! after that session, i haven't wanted to do anything involved with music since.

i said all that to say this....producers, always take control of your sessions. if not, it won't even be worth it in the end. you'll end up frustrated and mentally drained like i am. i'm going to try to have another one tonight. this time, i'm back to old tricks. if your ish ain't memorized, you might as well go home. if you're not contributing to the overall end result (i.e. rhyming, producing, beat boxing...something) go home. this is not a hang out spot, we're trying to work in here.

Have you ever seen videos of Kanye back in the day, before he was well known. Everyone in the studio is goofin off and chillin and he is just hard at work on the MPC2000 or ASR. And that's why he is famous today, hard work when he could be having fun!

I put a sign over my door saying "this is where BS ends and business begins", not to be an asshole but to let them know - no playing around! Set your price and stick with it, offer those that do take their work serious some incentives. Those that don't will waste their money, not your time.

Charge them!

People take advantage when it's free. Make them pay something even if its a $20.00 an hour.

Energy aint free
internet at free
Rent aint free

Charge them a fee!

Time is the one thing you wont get back. They could flake out and a project is down the drain! with you months of work (Speaking from experience, years in my case)

Exactly^^

I hear you, though.... People comin through just to screw around and "chill in the studio" like they're busta rhymes n shit...Chillin in the studio is the cool thing to do these days....

I even tell my artist that he better not lay down vocals unless the shit is memorized, and he can even deliver while reading...but I'm very adamant about having your shit READY...you can chill after the session....but time = money...and you can't get time back....IF they wanna chill and still pay you by the hour, then by all means let them chill...but if they're not paying...they're not staying...

I go through this nightmare almost every monday...One of my best friends from waaaaaay back moved up to boston for a while and right when he left thats when shit started really happening down here...I met some people, did a bunch of shows, developed a strong work ethic, went semi pro blah blah blah...you get the point, he on the other hand spent 5 years recording a project that never came out cause "his manager wouldn't get the cds printed"

When we used to make tracks together it was get a case of beer and a quarter of rip and lets get smashed and make a "classic"...

Needless to say the kid tracking on a ZOOM 8 track had a different idea of how to achieve that classic sound than the man who sits typing this rant...

Down here EVERYBODY can rap...for real, there are alot of pro level LYRICISTS with great deliveries...so its not like back when you were 16 and having the best verse in the room entitled you to act like a douche...What make you stand out now is professionalism and productivity...This guy doesnt get that.

He NEEDS to smoke a joint in between verses to capture the "same vibe" as the last...he always crys cause I stoped letting him smoke in the room after I seen where this shit was going...He has asked me to "remember who I am talking to" when asking him retake his tracks (to which I replied, I am a dick, we've been friends for a loooooong time, if you want nice you pay for it like everyone else)...dude needs to take a shot before the start of the session, he always brings a dumb broad who does nothing but ask questions while we are trying to work...and he cant seem to stay infront of the fucking mic for a whole song...I've NEVER met a rapper who takes a break WHILE RECORDING...The guys level of entitlement is infuriating....and on top of all this he tried to have a sit down with me about how I need to treat him with a certian level of respect in the studio (meanwhile this nordstroms shoe salesman has no car, no projects out, and sleeps on the couch at his brothers house...he's 28)

Before he left dude was the better rapper, had the few connects on this and that, made better solo tracks and I really looked up to him...now, not so much...so thats fucking with him, couple that with the lazy work ethic and you have a recipe for a waste of my monday night...and its been like this since february...the guy has 3 songs done...pathetic

the last thing that is frustrating is when he comes here to create...its a waste of my fucking time! write that shit at home! But acording to him there is no better creative time than the mid afternoon sunlight...

on the other hand my dude 5kullz I give him three beats on tuesday on friday hes got three songs memorized...ready to go

whew....

He's not paying....He's my buddy from waaaaaay back, like 7th grade, we've done everything together...we used to be a group before he moved now I told him I would help him with his solo thing and introduce him to the scene down here...so far its been a frustrating waste of time.

Hehe, great topic. I love hiphop, but rappers are lame and this is old news.
Like said before, you dont have to care if they screwing up THEIR studio time because they ARE going to pay you.

A smart rapper comes prepared, just arm the track and hes done in no time.
