Well basically I've been listening to my Dr. Dre Cd recently (2001) and I do admit that most, nearly all of his beats are extremely good, but I couldn't help noticing that the drums are nearly always exactly the same the whole way through a track, I mean: A half bar drum loop - exactly the same for the whole track, I've heard that Mel-Man is Dre's drum programmer and this must mean he get's payed shit loads of money just to make crap drum loops... Personally if I was gettin payed just to make the drums I'd do loadsa creative - never been done before type of shit... What do you think?

I mean on the Real the drum patterns don't really make Dre's tracks anyhow, its the samples, basslines and synth melodies...oh yeah knowing exactly the right pitches to use on 808 drops......think about it...that's my opinion tell if you think otherwise....he ain't never been a diamond D or a Premo for patterns....if you looking to study you using the wrong book for patterns but you will notice from the earlier NWA work he started to change his beats up to be more of a boom bap conventional hip hop pattern base........

well, heres the thing: simplicity is a very underated aspect of production! every beat does its own thing with the listener, and even heads like diamond and primo arent the most technical guys around. the real issue to think about when making a drum track is effectiveness for its purpose. a simple pattern can go a long way towards making the rest of the music interact well within its various elements. its not even about what will sell in dre's case. yes, it seems like he simplified things over time, but remember that with his age and 20 years of experience under his belt, there is sure to be plenty of programming wisdom in his head!
i would bet that they have become simpler because he understands the "less is more" concept. mel man's drum programming is effective, and on tracks like... whats the name? the one about dres brother on the chronic 2001? or even "whats the difference" they are just amazing but simple tracks that make you bob your head... i dont think sales play a role at all. lyricaly, now thats a differnt story.

Ok I mean look man these are two of the hall of famers in Hip Hop production I don't know how much more technical in terms of being a hip hop producer you could get??????? I mean what are you count basie or some studio musician masquerading as a hip hop producer???? anyhow I think that had to be theeeee dumbest statement ever made in relevance to hip hop production.....I mean are you implying that they aren't as technical as say......YOU????

what the hell are you talking about? i swear... people will do just about anything to squeeze an argument out of something. im not even going get into it with you.... it wasnt a diss by any stretch of the imagination, and the two are among my favorites, so i dont understand where your problem is. all i was that everything DOESNT NEED to be super technical to be good. i happen to like count basie, by the way.....

truth told that first quote is one the smartest things i have heard someone say lately about this whole production , i agree 100% hip hop is about dope beats that make you neck snap, it doesn't have to be compicated, the beat should never outshine the rapper, the best producer is one who makes artists sound extra special on there material. i think as producers people should concentrate a little more on making rapable beats. I have no problem with somewhat complicated beats, but the mc is the main event right!?

ok I didn't take it out of context but when I think technical I am thinking at the level of a producer and that is a Hip Hop producer.....the things that we as the producers that are here after the smoke and mirrors were removed from this skillful art......the shidd seems easy and especially when you take the hot or so call hott producers now that don't even think to be kind of skillfull with samples they just cut a 4 bar loop of an old soul song and match it up in a sequence....and then do a few hits of the sample.....I mean when I think technical the producer that came b4 are the most technical (in terms of sample usage and also pattern wise...(we take it for granted because someone already figured it out and did it so we can repeat it and say its easy now hahaha)....... the producers nowadays take what the old schoolers did for granted they didn't have the internet, nice forums like this, cut and paste software and feedback listens to get their shidd right........but look I am into the Mad Lib type production that theres a lot of crate digging and well put together tracks.......to hell with the easy do it kanye west tracks...I just don't feel the level of effort goes into the lower level technical stuff that you just snatch a loop from an old soul song and you somehow can say you produced it and someone sits back and calls it hot.....LOL
