ummmmm.... no the thing that i addressed in that quote was saying that he did it for sales, etc, which was nothi9ng more then an assumption... nobody was debating whether the accent was fake.... i never argued that.... the point was-hello-its reggae, show me a reggae artist WITHOUT the accent.

i'm arguing the fact that it seems like everyone just wrote dude off based on that alone

well yea i agree i dnt know a reggae artist without a jamaican accent but then i dnt know any non jamaican reggae artists apart from him so....

I know a bunch of reggae artists that dont have and accent, unfortunately, they sing in french...

Thing is, when I said that he did it for sales, you're right, I'm assuming he did...BUT like you said, when he sings with his natural accent, it doesn't sound right AND he chose a song where he fakes a Jamaican as his single. It's not undeniable proof, but you gotta ask yourself anyways...

My GUESS is:
-He chose a Jamaican accent because he wanted to sound like a standard reggaeman.
-He wants to sound like a standard reggaeman because reggae fans like it when reggae sounds like reggae.
-He probably also know that he could have radio play if he did have a standard sound...

Again, I know it's a guess... He had the choice between his accent and faking a Jamaican accent... if it wasnt to enter in the standard sound of reggae... why do it then?

he felt there were some parralels between judaism and reggae, thats part of what drew him into it to begin with... its much deeper then a "gimmick" ...

may i step in ? ok :)

ahhhhh, come on, its not like he read about parallels in a book and started doing songs after. he found them later and uses them now to justify. i have to agree with the others, faking an accent is wack as shit.
no matter how good you are... you know that gentleman guy from germany ? he does realy good popsongs, discostuff, and i like to dance to them with my girl. but i always have to smile a bit listening to him. because i know he is making up that style.

those people seem to start convincing themselves to be from an carribean island after a while lol, like i know this guy from my old hood, hes pale white like a piece of bleeched paper, the last time he saw a beach was like spain '97, but hes got that jah-tattoos all over him and even talks like he was alien or something. malibus most wanted, thats what i call him :D

truth you cant blame nobody for hating on it, because its UNREAL in the nearest sense of the expression.

you can do that when your 16, like we did rap in english back in the days with my boys, writing lyrics as if we were "straight outta compton".

my 2 cents

Honestly, I really don't think it's his voice that got him to where he is. The fact is, the media really helped boost his popularity. He's been on all the talks shows, toured with big named bands, the whole nine. His voice may be a gimmick, but he's not doing anything to tarnish the reggae scene. So why fuss over it?

Most of the songs off of Youth are produced by Bill Laswell, and that's reason enough to buy the album. I could see dicrediting Mat if his accent/voice/whatever missed the mark set forth by reggae pioneers, but its on point. He is respectful of reggae tenets and that is why he has not been dismissed by fans. Some artists say the same stuff but in a new way, he says new stuff in a traditional way.

If anybody knows about this stupid fag its me,

Everyday I get calls from friends and aquaintences telling me that my bands on the radio. I tell them that theyre fuckin crazy and what the've probobly heard is a fake we like to call matisyahu. I've been to Jamaica twice and Ive loved all types of jamaican music since I was about 10. People say I sound alot like Matisyahu when I sing but I say fuck that. I sing from my soul so occasionally a jamaican accent comes out in my singing. it doesnt help that both of my roomates are jamaican and half my school is as well!! However my bands music is respected by reggae artists everywhere because I dont have a fuckin GIMMICK like this fag. If I dressed up like a jew I'd prolly be rich right now too. basically Ive seen him live and everyone I came with agreed with me that his flow is wack and I could crush him lyrically. We even got offered to open for him but we refused. He's FAKE guys, sorry

IF you want real reggae.... listen to Sizzla, Capleton, Supercat, Bob Marley, ect....

and check out my lyrical styles if you want to see how people think somehow I sound like this guy....I personally know I'm better.

he doesnt suck cuz he dresses up like like a jew bro. thats prolly the onlyreason i might have al ittle respect for him. hes a jew,so dressing in his traditional jewish clothing is a noble thing to do, however, fakin an accent (like you say you do) is ridiculous.theres a culture, and a way of life behind that accent. one that him or you dont know anything about ,no matter how many people in your school are jamaican.no offense.....

Yo... If I put a line or two in my beats with a reggae slang, that's not fake, that's adding a lil flave to a beat. Singing a whole song... well, all right... that's a concept... but doing a bunch of beats with a reggae accent when it's not your real accent, that's just faking it!... whether it's a gimmick or not is something else, even if I think it is, personaly.

The only thing I heard this guy do is like a dance hall thing.
Thats not "Reggae" to me. Thats Dance hall.
He should stick to dancehall I was trippin on that.
A gimmick? Yeah probably,he must actually be orthodox though because he wouldve been"crucified" in the jewish community if he wasnt.
Every damn body has a gimmick though. Right now its mostly who's the baddest gangsta.
I feel you though Tree, that would make me hate 'em!
I cant hate on him I mean he's doin his thing, he can do that dancehall shit.
I like to flip my flow up and drop that type of shit in it.
I was doin that a long time ago but I wasnt really tryin to sound jamaican just how the lyrics flipped on the beat.
Just got back from Jamaica actually.
Thats a real nice island, the people are cool but the cops are crucial.

since i was ten years old. Ive been to jamaica so its always been a huge influence to me. It took me about two years to speak patois fluently. Then I just started singing and playing guitar and all i listened to was reggae and dancehall. I just started singing and the patoius came naturally to me
