So I am working on this "Drunk Pedestrians" album for the future (Like the album after next) and it seems I am starting to get some really heavy hitters as guests, and that rocks! So this album may start to make some waves and I was thinking about ways to market it. I am will to put like 2-3k in to just marketing the record. So my question is how to you guys find new music, any idea what the best way to be to reach new fans? I am thinking some google/banner ads maybe advertise with some podcasts and in a few magazines. What do you think?

Facebook ads are cheap and you can target specific demographics and "likes". I'd also hit the sites/blogs that post music you listen to, to get some promo directly from them. Google is good but is a bit general, and magazines I have no real clue. Id buy online magazine website space before I'd buy real magazine ads. 2Cents

the thing about selling anything, is supply and demand.
I would suggest maybe starting locally? What is the hip hop scene like in Nebraska?
The problem with selling any music right now is the fact that supply easily outstrips demand. Its good that you have a budget, maybe you should speak to distributors and retailers. Approach them directly, tell them your budget and see what they can do for you. If you can offer some sort of percentage of sales that at least gives them an incentive to make sales and help you. I would say dont just give them a payment with no percentage because then they have gotten all they will get and then have no incentive to help you sell more. The trend ive seen for the past few years is many many so called companies offering to make you the next big thing, but it really is them just satisfying the demand for "dreams" to be made. Be careful, play it smart, and try not to be taken in by the many sharks out there offering false promises.
Ive heard so many false promises over the last few years that I really lost a lot of faith in the whole industry. My problem though was a lack of budget, you at least have that, but dont throw that good money away, only invest carefully with proven methods.
What makes it harder is the fact that the whole industry is in flux and is still trying to figure out new ways to use the internet to its advantage, but still many major labels are struggling to find their feet in this new marketplace and business model. This is the reason I say start locally. If there is no real scene in Nebraska then maybe try to talk to people in New York or LA or other big urban centres, where there is still a pretty big hip hop scene. You could try college radio stations and other local radio stations get some airplay and publicity cheaply, build the buzz then approach larger stations.
Im not sure if there is much call for the boom bap style of hip hop anymore, as much as us older heads love it, most of the media/trend led kids dont. Im not saying dumb down because that defeats the whole object of making music in the first place, or changing to suit the trends, which stifles your creativity and isnt what you want to do(or maybe it is Im just assuming here) unless you are in it as a business and not an artform.
Artists stay broke and business people make money, thats just a fact of life IMO.
I think you have to weigh up the balance, and maybe have some mainstream style tracks in there just as bait for the youngsters to get onto the real "meat and potatoes" when they cop the album. Just like any business you have to think long and hard about who your target market is and how to reach them. maybe getting an industry directory and phoning around and asking questions from the people making money right now is the way to go. Just some ideas, nothing really too helpful there, but thats my 2 cents.

PM me your email and I will forward you some industry tips and advice I get in my email.

No this is the stuff I need. I was also thinking about printing some vinyl and send like 100 to the top DJ's in the country.
try and get in touch with them first to see if they will even be interested, the last thing you want is to invest in the demo material and postage costs for them to end up just throwing it away without even listening to it.
Also, how many radio dj's these days still even use vinyl? I think its become pretty standard for demos to be sent on CD. Vinyl these days is a very specialist media type, and production costs have risen dramatically, cd production is much cheaper and not to forget, user friendly.

Make a extremely sweet video and hope it goes viral. The rest is history.

This is the biggest thing. Music without video in 2011 is the quickest way to obscurity there is. Video is the new must have. Like a gangster image in the 90's/

This is true for everywhere I've seen in the last few years.

Well I think I should clarify my position a little. My goal in general is to build a following of people that like what I am doing anyway. And not convince people per se. Look at bands like Pixies, King's X, White Stripes or even Damu the Fudge Monk. They do there own thing and fans just LOVE them no one "kinda" likes the White Stripes, you either LOVE them or think they suck. There is no middle ground and I think my music lends itself to that as well. So that is my #1 plan to make the music I want to make and if people like it cool, if not I am not worried about it. I mean it's crazy, I am already getting emails about how people are really in to what I am doing so I think I need to grow that. The vinyl thing was a marketing ploy to stand out. I would probably send a CD as well. And honestly I want to create albums more than singles. Does that make sense?

Yea I get you. I say you absolutely MUST make video content. Of any kind. That and find like bands/artists and see if you can gravitate their fans. Youtube is the new radio/myspace whatever. Its where content is being both discovered and consumed. Google is also investing (in its self of course) huge sums for 1) more quantity and 2) MUCH higher quality. They're even giving their partners (Successful Users) Classes and tools to upgrade their content.

If your efforts are going to be anywhere they NEED to be on 1) Youtube 2) Twitter or 3) in the real world.

No matter what, it MUST be social.

*Facebook is bleh. Its more of a peripheral, not a place for the discovery of fans. Though a MUST for fan engagement. But you werent talking about that*

I agree with UNORTHODOX. You have to have your social networking down, internet wise and personal. Facebook, Youtube vids, and twitter feeds are the way to go but, I believe in pounding the pavement and selling yourself as a person instead of just trying to sell your music to the people. In my honest opinion, internet marketing is very impersonal these days. If you have any type of personality you should hit the road locally or cross the borders to neighboring states to "shake as many hands and kiss as many babies" as possible. I think with a couple 1000 business cards, a few posters, a table facade, and your product you could set up shop at a local Walmart or a flea market and get busy. Plus, if you have a couple $1000 to put into your project I would look into getting some promotional items "freebies" to go along with your project. Just be CLEVER not CORNY. People want an experience when they buy shit. You'd be surprised how many cats in Atlanta, Houston, Memphis, and parts of Florida are doing this shit and are "Diddy" status in their respective cities. Plus, this is with no radio play. Make you money work for you. Keep your circle contained and don't let the vultures in and you will reap. That's just my strategies though.
