All in the ears of the beholder IMO, but the cliche "expected" sound tends to be aggressive and angry usually since it is a battle and thats usually what people want.

Really depends on the battle in the end.

word. somtimes its nice to totally flip it though and get on a happy sorta sounding beat. coz this gives your track an under tone of arrogance as if you wernt even angry, which is then doubley demoralizing to your target, think like that diss song eminem tossed at canibus, think it was called ''can-a-bitch''. . . oh and i secong church bells for than funeral vibe. thats gangsta everytime lol.

What I would suggest for a battle/diss beat is like a freestyle beat. Something very minimal, maybe only a drum break/drums, bass, and a very sublte sample/instrument. With those kinda tracks, you don't want peoples ears to pick up the beat as much as the lyrics, you want the lyrics to stand out, but at the same time have something fresh knockin in the background. Listen to "Top Billin" from Audio Two, you will notice that your not paying attention to the instrumental too much (besides the urge to head bang to the beat lol), but you will be listening a lot to the vocals a lot more than the beat since it's just drums (some nice ass drums at that).

Doesn't really matter diss tracks have been done on all types of beats ...
Battle tracks however say it its sound obviously in its name ... Battle, fight,
etc tell you aggressive, angry, gritty/dark.
