Hey illmuzik fam,

This is you main-newbie Bluphi!!! here with a question:

Im going the Apple macbook route and I need software that can fit into my production needs.

The main piece of software I need is an Audio Editor. Something that uses my extensive sample/sounds library and :

1) Spread my samples/sounds in notes across my midi controller keys

2) Something that can put ill effects on my sounds

3) That can chop, reverse, edit and layer the sounds from my huge library. Cause Audacity is getting old and boring.

I should be recieving my MAC soon, and everything that I've looked at (Cool edit, Soundforge) is related to a regular PC.

My homeboy is trying to convert me to use Logic but im still searching.

Any help would be BIGGGGGG HELP.

Please Holla back illmuzik Fam

Thanx

You're going to have to wait till the fall or even the winter for most of the major audio software makers to come up with updates or full versions of their products for the Macbook and Macbook Pro lines.

I have one myself and the Intel processors are sick but...Native Instruments, Bias Inc. & and other do not have versions supporting the Intel Core Duo architecture yet. You could run the software in Rosetta mode, but running audio apps in that mode makes 'em slow like molasses.

Kontakt seems to be what you are looking for, but you gotta be patient. Unless you jump into Logic, Apple made sure that software's good to go on all their product lines.

they just released Ableton Live for the new intel macbooks- excellent program. you put samples into "clips" which automatically stretch to your song tempo... then screw them up with all sorts of crazy effects it comes with. it also runs plugins which is really nice. the program's really good for making beats live on the fly; if you assign each part of the beat (drums, bass, samples) to a different midi key you can mix up your arrangements live... hence the name

Get Guru dog. Kontakt is cool but its too complicated and you can only play, you can't sequence. Guru can do everything on your list except reverse the samples, and that's planned for the next version. The Intel Mac version is in beta right now, you can get a copy of that if you sign up over at their forums.

Guru is that ish. Its like a software MPC. Do yourself a favor and get an MPD16 with it. You can thank me later. and while you're at it, pick up i3 DSP Quattro. Its a standard audio file editor like audacity but more powerful.

And get Rax so you can load up plugin synths and sample them, to load them into Guru. that way you can load Kontakt into Rax, put an eq plugin on it, play that sick piano line, record it, and load it into Guru to chop it up and sequence it. Basically if you're into making your own loops.

I got those three pieces on my Powerbook G3 (I know, ancient, but I got a G5 at home) along with my sample library and a few plugins and that's all I need to crank out beats. Logic is awesome, I have it on the G5, but sometimes its not the best to make beats, where Guru just inspires me.

And if you wanna take it a step further, the macbook can run windows, so you can load up all the PC software you want.
