Yung Joc- 69k total (I know...he's ass anyway but damn..major airplay...major video play...and still no sales)

UGK-283k total (this is a damn good album....wtf is up with that..there first #1 album and not even gold..WOW!)

Talib Kweli-84k total (Not his best shit but it is what most call "Real Hip Hop"...real recognize real..where's his support? I know he has a limited fan base with his concious music but damn...it's real limited)

Common-306k total (whoa! another real hip hopa! "shakes head" everybody's talking the talk but only about 306k {depending on if they only bought one copy} is walking the walk)

Akon-2.6mill (dude better hope like hell he never offends white people because I can guarantee only maybe 200k of the people that bought his album were of color..that's real...not racial!)

Swizz Beatz-60k total (damn Swizz....guess u better stick to producing and getting that Pop music money...guess we all should start doing pop and country or dawn the ski mask and get at these pro ball players like everybody else seem to be doing right about now...how many ball players got tied up and robb'd this week?)

MIA's kala-42k total (huh.....who this?)

Aesop Rock's-13k total (damn homie...hop you're not on a major label...can u say dead man walking?)

If Kanye or FiF doesn't go platinum in their first week I know the game is over!

WE ALL BETTER HOPE LIKE HELL THESE INDEPENDENT LABELS WEATHER THE STORM AND DON'T GET GOBBLED UP BY THE MAJORS....THERE'S IS NO WAY IN HELL I WOULD ENTERTAIN THE IDEA OF SIGNING WITH A MAJOR LABEL NOW OR IN THE NEAR FUTURE...NOT AS AN ARTIST ANYWAY!!! THE HIP HOP PRODUCERS WILL BE THE LAST ONES TO FALL OFF BUT WITH NO ARTIST TO PUSH YOUR MUSIC TO IT WON'T BE LONG.....PRODUCERS ARE DEFINITELY GOING TO SUFFER IN 08'.......SO U WANT THAT "REAL HIP HOP" HUH?...I CAN'T TELL! A WHOLE LOT OF GUM BUMPIN AND NEXT TO NO
"SPEND SOMETHIN'......TERRRIBLE!

I GUESS THE ONLY WAY TO GO RIGHT NOW IS DIGITAL DOWNLOADS....OTHER THAN SINGLES FOR DJ'S DON'T PRESS UP ANY CD'S OR VINYL....SPEND YOUR MONEY ON PROMOTION AND SLOW THE BOOTLEGGERS DOWN BY ONLY HAVING YOUR SHIT ON THE NET.....IT WON'T STOP THEM BUT AT LEAST IT MAY SLOW THEM DOWN!

Exactly what I was thinking. I guess you damn near have to do independent deals with the major download companies to be able to do this for a living now and in the future. CD's are about to be like Vinyl...who would have ever thought that? I just got a check for $80.26 from digital downloads of some shit I did back in 2002. It was originally just a CD sale deal but they got with a few digital download sites and now I'm getting small checks every now and then from them.....shit bugged me out when I first got a check for some shit I basically didn't know anything about!

naw, all music is suffering it's just that hip hop's drop is more dramatic. unlike country, the fanbase have bootlegged and embraced technology, to better bootleg ish. there's still less 'urban' stations than contemp. rock and pop stations, country stars can get a public concert on the major networks. people haven't realized how incredible it was for hip hop to sell and hold that spot despite the obstacles. now that it's no longer a sure bet, we'll see who's really about puttin' out the music, good, bad, pop, or "real".

online sales are not counted to billboard charts .. yet at least .. people are still buying music the format has shifted .. itunes,ringtone,amazon.. are taking the cake instead of the cd stores. the indusrty is alive but the people who buy cd in the store are fading...

spanish no offense but ur an idiot if u dont think its a good thing if 50 or kanye goes platinum .. esp kanye ... people hate on kanye but he has been a champion of more underground and concious.. if he can succeed he can bring more orgnaic and conscious material to the mainstream.. common anyone? .. this resurgence that commons has had is largely due to him teaming up with kanye, and im not just talking musicwise ... kanye came from the same situation alot of us are in right now .. just normal cats who produce beats in our little home studios... look where he is now .. his success means we can succeed ... kanye and 50 arent the problem in hip hop right now .. wake up ... imo the problem is these newer one hit wonder artists that are getting signed with these dumb ass singles... its a problem that hurricane chris has a record deal with lines like "its so hot in the club that i aint got no shoes on" .. its a problem that nobody makes ALBUMS anymore .... kanye and 50 make albums.... whether u feel them or not they are talented artists that can put a focused project togther which is more than i can say about alot of other cats out right now whose shit sounds like a damn mixtape with a million features and no focus, concept, or cohesiveness.

oh yeah talib hasnt been hot since blackstar and nas' last album was wack (still luv him though) i dont need more of them .. i need some new artists that can carry the torch that they had and put out some shit thats really hot and creative (did somebody say smash brothers? lol)

just let time take its course. Its all a slow transition right now and I am not "praying" for 50 and Kanye to fall off I'm just saying that I wouldn't be trippin if they fell off....

HOPE IT DOESN'T TRANSITION TO NOTHINGNESS!

Did u see Talib's numbers? wtf? That "REAL SHIT" is in the toilet like everything else(actually it's more so..the numbers don't lie). Do you actually think praying for 50 and Kanye's down fall is good for the game as a whole? I would lean more toward it being a sign of the end of the game! Those two artist failing will not up the numbers for that "real shit" you type about. If that was the case Common and Talib would be at least gold....they aren't no where close to that status. If the real shit fake shit, commercial shit gutter shit, south shit north shit and everything in between doesn't stop and hip hop doesn't come together as a whole and actually stop yappin and go out and "legally" purchase this music, we won't have much more to talk about on either front. And I'm not excluding "me" from that charge...we all are guilty!

imo the problem is these newer one hit wonder artists that are getting signed with these dumb ass singles... its a problem that hurricane chris has a record deal with lines like "its so hot in the club that i aint got no shoes on" .. its a problem that nobody makes ALBUMS anymore
i agree with you hear. alot of artist are pushing their first single, and in most cases, it's the best song on there 15 (add intro, outro and 5 skits makes it's 22 tracks..what a deal) track album. people are tired of spending their money on albums only to get ripped off when a fraction of the material is worth listening too. they'd rather 10 bucks on some blank cd-rs and download the songs they want and make their own soundtrack and be done with it. making albums available to download(online..via amazon, etc) seems to be the way right now to combat the downloading issue. i'm not sure what the consensus is on track for track purchases are but i would think that would be an attractive look to the online buyers. i think people are gettin tired of the repetitive music, repetitive marketing plans..most of these newcomers are a dime a dozen(not unique and very one demensional) so why spend your money anyway..it's not like you're getting something special.

.... kanye and 50 make albums.... whether u feel them or not they are talented artists that can put a focused project togther which is more than i can say about alot of other cats out right now whose shit sounds like a damn mixtape with a million features and no focus, concept, or cohesiveness.
indeed. like them or not, 50 and Kanye appear to be on two sides of the same coin. Kanye appears to challenge his sound and experiment more especially with this album (don't know if i agree with him being a spokesmen for the underground artist, considering that he's pushing for more "grammy-esque hip hop" (his words), where as 50 still seems to stick with what works for him (or what is him) nonetheless..both focus and cohesive projects.

with adapting to online marketing/purchasing, the more people get back to CREATING music instead of MANUFACTURING music, things will eventually shift back to a point where both artist and listener/fan will be happy. but alot of work and sacrifice is still to come, but i think a shift has begun. i think it's going back to the hand in hand grassroots approach.

for reference listen to:
Krs and Marley Marl - Nothing new (they ain't sayin nothing new)
"instead of what can i get from the industry...what are you bringing to the industry"

50's on his downslide. I wouldn't be suprised if 50 doesn't make another solo album after this. G-Unit is pratically a warp (buck's album flopped, Bank's album bricked, Yayo..LOL!, Mobb..need i say more). as far as Kanye, in a couple of years, i could see him doing a "timbaland" and switch to straight pop because "hip hop is too easy" or some other arrogant reason of that nature.

50's already spoke on Def Jam buying up Kanye's album, and to look for 2nd weeks numbers. so as far as major labels go, he's already opened the proverbial pandora's box. it's almost like he still should have left "before i self destruct" as apart of this albums title..what yall think: Curtis: Before I Self Destruct

the current system is broken for the major labels, meaning they're not making three hands over fist just hand over fist. we, hip hop especially but also urban, never had much leeway for poor sales on the majors or their imprints. so it means these artists and indies have to either start the new trend for selling the music or be there at the start.

come sept 11, i hope i'm wrong but i think that chesney dude is gonna sell more. no bootlegs and no downloaded leaks. combined with the surefire method of country sales through record clubs, i don't see 50 or ye being able to beat him. funny thing is, even if he sold more, regardless of his points, just on record sales he wouldn't make the same amount due to labels deducting 50% of royalties from record club sales combined with 40% of country (and supposedly pop) being sold via clubs. ain't this business beautiful?
