"Long Way 2 Go" Strings?

If you guys have heard that new Cassie song (http://www.myspace.com/cassiemyspacemusic) the producer Ryan leslie's got some pretty sick sounds on the chorus, and I'm wondering if anyone knows what instrument (or what its equivalent would be in reason) to get those huge chords on the hook. It sounds like he put a phaser and a hall type of reverb on whatever the patch is, I just can't tell what the original sound is. Is it just a high pitched synth? I've heard a similar sound in a lot of songs over the years and I'm curious what it is. thanks fam

On a side note, i had an idea for a new thread for The Lab and wanted to see what people here think. I can't speak for anyone but myself but i find the best way to learn about production is to study what's out there and really break it down and understand how a producer got a certain sound or whatever. Maybe we could start a thread where if you hear something in a mainstream song that sounds very close to say, a reason patch, or a particular soundfont, you can post it up and share the info. If you notice, especially with Southern stuff, a lot of these big producers right now are using the same patches or synths and then just tweaking them slightly differently for different beats. Example...listen to "What you Know" and then the new Jeezy single, "i love it", or "White House" on Rick Ross' album and "Mouths to feed" on the new Luda CD. I'm not about biting anyone, but understanding how these producers who are successful get their sounds would benefit everyone here.

^ Use the combinator for the organ, I'd reccomend the Sonic Refill Organs and Pianoz, Layer it with the Long F patch from AKAI Strings ensemble, and prolly any good saw synth. ..

Yo class, can u give me the basic ffunctions of a telephone filter so i can tell em how to emulate it in reason.. as far as i've experiment there is no telephone filter in reason

Use an EQ, Cut 63Hz (a lot), same with 250Hz, boost 1500Hz (a lot) and 3000Kh (dont boost it to much), Cut a bit at 5000Kh and cut 8000Kh (a lot).

That should give you the telephone effect. :)

I would think a high pass filter should get you there.
Or high shelf one.I am not sure I get them mixup sometimes.

man you can't underestimat the fact that all that has happened is there is an organ and also a modulated wave mixed or layered with the strings....and just to top it a phaser effect was used slightly, I don't know about a telephone filter though, the range of the strings seem to be pretty intact...possibly some very slight lo fi filtering....you can actually hear the lead synth morphing with the string sounds and btw the strings used are very synthesised......I would not be surprised if he used a pedal on the strings....just my own observation, but if you are using reason the combinator is definitely how you would do something like that.

nah... The strings is stock reason... Easy.

Organ can be pretty stock cuz its blended behind the strings.

I would think a high pass filter should get you there.

Yea. . . as with a the telephone filter there are no real filters for reason u can just apply like that, there are a few HP and LP settings on the Dr Rex and nn19 etc. but they arent that effective cuz they are preset.. So i would be in the same situation, using a graphic eq and doin it manually.

As far as the synth.. I wouldnt put that in the combinator with the organ and the strings. seein how its not playin the same notes... the strings and organs are playing chords, and the synth is just there in 1 polyphony phasin. I'd get a singing synth and put a phaser on it, or just find a synth that does that with modulation.

Lol. . . he was asking how to emulate the sound. . . i dont think Hi-Lo cares what dude used if its not a sound we got in reason. . .

I'm wondering if anyone knows what instrument (or what its equivalent would be in reason)

I love how everyone has anwers here....

Only I have the real answer hahaha

We mixed that song at our studio. In fact, I was the assistant engineer for the session. Pat Viala mixed it.

I know Ryan, been to his crib. Ryan Leslie uses lots of keybaords, but for the most part, he uses the Alesis Andromeda. I'm 95% sure that the strings he used are from the Andromeda.

I would have to actually pull up the mix backup to see what the reverb/insert settings are, but I can tell you we use the Lexicon 960L reverb, and I'm pretty sure the verb used on the strings was just a large hall.

Well, obviously you could create similar sounds. I'm sure you could find a synth and layer it with some strings and maybe a mellotron, and with the right Levels/EQ/Reverb settings could get it pretty close.

But Ryan defaintely used a keybaord on it. And as I said, I'm 95% sure it was the Andromeda.

thanks for the info man, haha i can't find much of a better answer than the one from someone who was in the studio with him! this forum is crazy.. if he'd care tell him i think his beats are incredible.
