meanwhile, the cats who just pursue what their PASSION is, will be excelling.

you do not "excel" any greater by doing both any more than you choose one over the other...

basically, if you pursue #1, what you are best at, and #2, what you most ENJOY creating, regardless of your method, wether its live instruments, sampels, keyboards, hardware, software, etc., or any combination of that, THATS what you will excell at..........

why do you guys keep arguing this point? there is no right answer to this... if you have skills at whatever it is you do... than thats what you do... thats what will shine through ultimately...
i will keep this thread open, but i dont see a reason to.

if it sounds hot, its hot, i personally use a lot more samples than synths and shit, but that's just becuz i like that dirtier, east coast sound, which is mostly sample based

yes. the operative word, for those who think things should be a certain way, was "CHOICE".

choice. get it? choice? CHOICE. C-H-O-I-C-E. C,H,O,I,C,E.

as in, its MY CHOICE to create music in WHATEEVER WAY I CHOOSE. USE whatever gear i CHOOSE.

while i loathe the topic and the idea completely, it may be a good theme for the Battle That! comp-

Samplers Vs. The Play It Yourself Guys!

you damn skippy. and dont you forget it.

that left a mark, merc. i'm actually having a real rough day today. my sister just miscarried her baby, and the father has a lot to do with it. he's a cop caller, so i cant beat his ass like i would like to, since my job cant employ people with a record.

i agree with what your saying. the reason why i said what i said is because i used to be against using keys and then when we had that keys only beat comp it opened my eyes and now i like keys too and it has helped my beatmaking so much. i suppose its not the same for everyone.

each to his own.

but i think every producer should have, to some extent, a passion for experimenting.

well, you hit the nail on the head right there EQ (thats what im going to call you. i cant keep typing the full name! that cool?)

basically, you have to be able to try new things. without risk, there is little gain. as stated earlier, yesterday was a most frustrating day. i had quite a few posts where i was snapping at folks.

plus, i am baffled at A) the fact that these topics have been beat to death many times over, and B) everyone thinks that things should be done their way and neglect the most rational thought that should tell them that everyone else just doesnt do things the way they think it should be done. that gets very irritating after awhile.

all things considered, i thik you will find that those who become great at anything, they did so bytaking risks, by doing something that takes them out of their comfort zone. thats a big oart of WHY i went keys only- thats a far greater challenge for me personally. the possibilities for me opened up in a way that they never would have with sampling. you know what my reward has been thus far? everyone keeps asking me where i get my "samples" from. i just think that more than anything people need to pursue the thing that drives them.

sorry to hear the bad news homie, i hope that everything will work out...

on another note: do what you have to do in order to create the perfect product - all i (and many many others) care about is the final merchandise. i don't care if you sample your pets, your crazy (yet sexy!) female neighbor or your concubine (fo' real!). music is created in many various ways, and each one shall choose his own individual path.
you wanna sample? GREAT!
you wanna compose your own melody? SUPER!
you wanna do both? EVEN BETTER!

but yo, let's not judge people by how they craft their art, ok?

Peace :dj: ,

im sorry to hear about your bad day. is your sister aight?

i agree with everything you said.

one thing though. you mentiuoned that you find sampling to be way more challenging. i have found that both keys and sampling are as challenging as you make them. for example keys are easy if you just write something like ding dong ding dong etc and sampling is easy if you get a sample and loop it to buggery. if on the other hand you decide you want to make a complex composition using keys, that will be a real challenge and will test you. and same goes for sampling. if you want to chop that sample to shit and rearange it and blend that shit with other shit, that will be challenging too.

i think they are equally as challenging in that they both offer the same amount of invitation for creativity. the variable is in ones strengths and weaknesses in my opinion.

feel me?

ps. "Eq" is fine bro lol.

my sister isnt doing to well. its just now hitting her. thanks for asking though.

as far as the topic, what i really meant-and should have said outright-was that being a great composer motivates me much more. it isnt so much the challenge factor. there are so few in hip hop who are good songwriters. i want to gain those skills, since i also enjoy other forms of music, and i plan on doing some acoustic production as well.

for me, its really about making that my niche, because thats what drives me more. sampling doesnt hold my interest the same way. i think this is also what will help me make my mark, since i dont really make "keyboard beats" that sound like keyboard beats, you get what i am saying?

you should get someone else to blast his ass for you. if i lived by you, i would be happy to drop an elbow or two on em'.
as for the topic at hand keyboards vs. samplers
i feel like i could crush the competition with just a drum machine! orig-i-nal

one thing is, i hate hitting keys for drums, it feels so weird. i even learned the ropes on a ASR 10.
