The classic example of a formula is Timbo......I mean he either changes the bpm....or changes the accent.....or substitutes claps or other percussion and might move the downbeat.....but basically most of his patterns are based upon a simple....1 2 &3, 1 2&3....you know the kick, kick & clap...get ya freak on beat....LOL...I like the beat he did for Beanie Siegel....but it was classic Timbo

LOOK, PEOPLE,

this debate is sensless and CIRCULAR- it just keeps going round and round. THE BOTTOM LINE is that hip hop was a culture and sound created out of ingenuity and improvision; use whatever the hell you want to use. it takes a different set of skills to do traditional phrase sampling then it takes to compose an original piece. IF IT SOUNDS GOOD, WHO CARES how it was made, who was sampled, so long as the artist gets their paper for it (unless its chopped beyond recognition).... i am at a stage where i choose not to sample. i would rather focus on my arranging skills. GUESS WHAT? if i cant do bit well then it doesnt matter. timbo can do whatever he does however he does it because its succesful. if kanye can keep bangin out tracks that people pay mad cash for by looping and speeding up a samle with ZERO chops, more power toi him. i may not respect it, but oh well.... thats life.

what i find rediculous is madlibs need to "let us know" that he can do keyboard tracks as well. is he feeling insecure, or what? who cares? i dont. we should just keep our mouths shut and let our music speak for itself (I KNOW I HAVE MY OPINIONS AND I'M VERY BLUNT WITH THEM, but i dont really care who can do what these days. just make the damn music and get over it... thats my motto these days).... thats like kanye west constantly reminding us how he's a "a producer that raps better than most rappers"- especially when he doesnt. these guys must be pretty damn insecure. am i the only one who feels this way?

Truth you are right basically both skills merge at some point...I mean if you know how to use a sample then you probably know how to resample your own riffs....but either way you got like I said earlier arrangement is the common denominator.....I think that there is an argument though not even at the level of the lower level producers like on here or on ya block but it is definitely a debate even with producers like Madlib and the like.....because he is really more underground so you really have no choice if you staying Tru Skool though......ya feel me...but if you not Tru Skool then there's way more options than vinyl..you can see the debate isn't just amongst the illmuzik producers but what Skool you are from as far as what elements are included in the finished product.......

i didnt read much of wat u people posted above but heres my take:

1. i find it really hard to make up melodies with the keyboard, and sometimes the sounds just get repetitive for me. or u can just bang on the keyboard (a great example is Jadakiss ft. Styles - Dope Money) senselessly and u might find a hot melody or something.

2. sampling is really easy, especially if ur lazy like me. lets say u have a lot of records to sample. u can just chop out a piece of the melody and loop it over and over with drums on it. or u can get unlazy (which i rarely do) and really flip the sample making it sound nothing like the original.

3. wen i said the sampling is easy, especially if ur lazy im not saying that any1 that samples is lazy, just me really lol.

I've tried both and think it depends on your approach. If you get a sample, chop it up, rearrange it, put your own drums behind it (which is sampled chops as well), it takes skill and more work to go through old records, cds, tapes, whatever, having that keen ear, and making sure everything blends good. It kind of reminds me of when I used to dj: blending beats and scratching n stuff. Sampling is more fun to me. As for keyboard beats, I would say that its basically rendering a melody you may have in your head and laying it down. I find it can be really easy but also hard if you have a creative block (writers block). With samples, the inspiration comes quicker and its much more plentiful. All in all, I think it's dead even on this debate. It takes just as much talent to sample as it does to make keyboard beats.
