When I first got into Hip Hop I was into all and only the mainstream side of it, and then I baptized myself in the liquid smooth sounds of The Roots and was introduced to an intirely diffrent level of Artistry.

I got deep into poetry, neo-soul, underground hip hop..pretty much almost everything the opposite of mainstream. I agreed with concious rapper when they said that mainstream hip hop is garbage, hip hop has become this and that, Free creativity n' all.

I love everything that I have become threw hip hop music...but just as mainstream hip hop has become the same shit over and over...I feel like a lot of underground and concious heads have done the same damn thing they preach about....and it seams like they PREACH about it ALL THE TIME!!!!

I can't count how many hip hop songs I've heard about how "Mainstream Hip Hop is this and Bling is bad that"....and personaly I've gotten to the point where I feel like this.....CHANGE THE DAMN SUBJECT!!!!!

I KNOW THAT HIP HOP HAS BECOME SHALLOW AND ALL THIS OTHER STUFF, LET IT GO!!!!

AS I get older I have realized that more people than I thought understand how shallow shit is nowadays....But the fact is that most people just don't care....and Those people who make he shallow shit, they just trying to eat cause they don't have any other alternative so they don't have time to take chances...And Yea it's sad that the record industrie feeds off that but I mean unless u are going to threaten each and every record label at gun point to start selling real music...just shut the F*** UP!!! and do you!!

I feel like alot of people look at underground and backpack rappers and say "They think they are above the "average" nigga all spiritual and shit" and to be honest alot of the time when I buy an underground album...some of the shit they say don't make no sense or is to deep to be heard over a loud beat and needs to read and anylized. Jedi Mind Tricks to me makes no damn sense..and most of there songs are written about the same damn thing. So those who say mainstream is the same shit over and over are hipocrits mostly. just becuase a rapper is talking about things other than bling and hoes doesn't automatically mean he is exempt from being monotonous and wack.
rappers can try to imitate Common and Outkast the same way a rapper can sound just like Nelly or 50 Cent. MAistream and Underground are just two diffrent levels of Hip Hop...and I think that concious cats are a lil bit bitter at the fact that they work there ass off tho make a banging album but on sell a 1/4 as much as a crunk artist who threw some shit together in a couple of weeks. NOT SAYING THAT THEY ARE JEALOUS...JUST FED UP WITH THE WAY THE SYSTEM WORKS! But If you aren't going to do somthing about it along the line of Malcom X or Martin Luther to change it....quit bitchin' and just keep banging out your shit and don't worry about what the mainstream folk are doin...Just let that shit go.

...just an opinion...

I listen to both mainstream and underground, and i agree both are getting really repetive with their content, got to admit tho, when i'm fuct up at a party and i hear some krunk shit or somthin like g-unit i do enjoy it because at that moment i'm totally agreeing with what their rappin about cuz all i care about is gettin krunk, findin a hot ass bitch, and gettin more krunk which is pretty much what every krunk song is about.. but in my sober mind or any time i'm not fuct up at a party i could never imagine listenin to that bullshit so that leads me to believe that everyone listenin to mainstream which is most young people today are all jus gettin fuct up and partying. so krunk music 50 cent and all that shit is the most popular music because partying and being fuct up is the most popular mainstream thing to do for young people today, and young people today are getting fuct up and partying because their bein influenced by krunk music and 50 cent and shit like that so its a viscouse circle that isn't gunna stop til the popluar mainstream music becomes somthin more consciounce and positive and motivating thats what needs to change about music today
hip hop has such a profound impact on popular culture today it is probably the strongest influnece on kids today, everyone is influenced by hip hop and think of what a negative message mainstream hip hop sends out especially gangsta rap how muc hthey glorify treatin women like hos and hustlin and "not givin a fuck" i kno i sound like an old man but life would be a whole lot better today if it was cool to be a good person instead of a hardass gangsta

why does everybody feel like they have had an awakening when they work out that all styles within a genre make bad music.....yes alot of underground music is whiney and bad, and alot isnt, yes alot of commercial music is insipid and bad, and some isnt......this isnt rant or essay worthy stuff, anyone who hasnt worked this out by now is an idiot and quite likely is going to remain stupid after this has been pointed out to them

I gotta agree with L-Lament, I too have started to notice that ironically the underground artists moan so much about the shallow and monotonous content of the mainstream artists that they have become reliant on those things to actually have something to talk about.

I think underground artists need to show how they are better and less shallow by simply ignoring all the supposedly idiotic mainstream stuff - not neceserily 'rising above it' or whatever, but just not relying on it for the basis of every song.

There is definitaley a place for underground hiphop and more commercial, mainstream hiphop - as people here have already said they are enjoyed in different circumstances, evoke different moods etc.
