Although the US has had support from it's allies, it was never authorised to act as the "world police" by the UN. In fact it has been quite the opposite.

The Iranians haven't launched an aggressive war in almost two centuries.

The last war they were involved with was when Iraq attacked them with US backing and direction. That war added up to a couple of million dead across both sides.

Iran held the first democratic elctions in the Middle East in 1953 and elected a guy called Mohammed Mossadegh. He was hugely popular. Mossadegh decided to nationalise their oil because foreign firms weren't really paying tax or contributing to the economy.

The OSS, the precursor to the CIA, under the direction of the US President, organised a coup to overthrow the democracy and reinstall the Shah (Persian for King). The Shah was a monarch who was hated and chased out by the people not long before the election. He was one of the most brutal rulers in the Middle East and was a nightmare to the country.

The Shah's secret police, SAVAK, were trained by Stormin' Norman Schwarzkopf mark 1. The Shah ruled until 1979 when a coup overthrew him and the US Embassy was stormed and the folk who worked there, most likely a mix of CIA and diplomats, were taken hostage.

All that shit done to the Iranians was bad ju-ju. Surely it's no surprise the they were pissed when they got their country back.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't like to live under their system. But they are not a threat to anyone. It's a very developed country, they've got a lot to lose.

They arent a threat beyond making oil prices rise, which is prolly being done so they can blame it on Iran so they can go to war.

That's one reason. I think there's a whole bunch ranging from racism, to Christian rapture weirdness, to control freaks controlling, to oil, to Israel (some want to defend it, others to expand it), to revenge, to irrational hate.

None of the reasons are productive and only ill will come of it. And that's the traditional style ill, not our illin' style ill.
