Their battle in the 90's was dope.

It was really one sided. You have up and coming mc Canibus destroying LL on wax, but LL's popularity and Canibus' inability to pick hot beats had people saying it was competitive. I love LL Cool J, but he's one of the most overrated battle mcs of all time. 'Rip the Jacker' was an old fashioned beat down. In my opinion he did LL worse in that song than he had in '2nd round ko'. LL's 'the ripper strikes back" and 'rosta imposta" were wack. LL's song "back where I belong" was a hot diss. Had he released that 1st or 2nd, the battle would have been competitive, but after he released that, canibus came back and put the nail in the coffin with "rip the jacker". I love 'em both though.

While you are 100% about the Bis destroying L., overrated is kind of harsh considering before that , he was perfect in battle raps with Jack the Ripper and To the Break of Dawn...taking on Ice T, Mc Hammer and Kool Moe D. Peep:

"Gimme a lighter-Woof/ now you're cut loose/from that jherri curl juice"

"that's right, a little kick for that crap/because my old gym teacher ain't supposed to rap"

Actually KMD was serving LL something serious in the 80s. "let's go" and "Death Blow"(which followed "how ya like me now" ) should have been a nail in the coffin, but Def Jam is such a powerful machine. KMD would LL with so many verbal beatdowns and he could say something plain like, "i'm double platinum, watching you get dissier" and the people would eat it up. LL taking out Hammer and Ice T is the equivalent of Eminem taking out Benzino and Ja Rule. These guys aren't battle MCs. I loved Ice T but even he would tell you he's no battle mc. LL's battles against canibus and KMD were watch the future of battle rap became. No matter how much you destroyed your opponent, if he has more fame and cash, he wins automatically.

KMD didn't win that battle, historically. No Def Jam Machine.LL's rhymes were better imo. Death Blow was very nice, Break of Dawn was better. That's my vote, that was the majority concensus when it happened. You may be one of those who felt KMD won, and that's coo....but to conspiracy theory the Def Jam Machine as the reason L won,...that's a reach. And no such machine ( even though Def Jam was a way stonger force at the time) could save LL from Canibus' 2nd Round Knock out.

After "let's go" the battle was over. lol. "Death blow" came after "to the break of dawn". It wasn't even needed. I remember people quoting the double L breakdown, I don't remember too many people quoting "jack the ripper" or "to the break of dawn". LL had his chance to battle KMD on stage as well, but he took the album approach due to that he was selling more records than KMD cuz even he knew the outcome. Don't get me wrong, I'm an LL fan, but I hate it when people try to rewrite history.

I remember people quoting that line also, I think I was quoting it. It was hot AND it was the only thing he said worth quoting.
I also agree with your previous point about it's similar to Em taking out Benzino and Ja, but that still can't take away from how ill Nail In The Coffin was.
