I would say its all by feel, Cause some beats may have a different vibe so maybe a long intro may be good for one but another beat may need a shorter to the point intro. like a dark beat that has a build up feeling to it before the beat starts, so the intro will be longer.

I think 4 bars is pretty standard. No more than 8. They may seem faster or slower because of the BPM. Don't worry about it.

Cosign, and the intro is just to give the people a feel for the groove of a track before the mc laces it . Im the worlds worst on intro's(well not the WORST) but I have alot of songs that just jump right into the song lol! I like to attack cats I guess..

Sometimes I'll make an intro 7 1/4 bars or 8 1/8 bars or whatever, just to mess with people's expectations.

I do alot of intro's for my beats. I always make sure I have a version of the same song with no intro for other formats. Over 4 bars is over kill if you ask me. U have to take into account for what format you want to push the song i.e radio, club banger, album. Very seldom do you hear intro's on the radio or in the club! In the club the beat needs to come in banging at the hook or the verse. This applies to radio as well. Intro's usually only come into play for album versions of songs i.e CD, tape, Record!

HAHA After 3 minute intro the mc pops off with "YOu know what? IIIIMMM..." end.
but he should "ok here we go, here I go " for the whole intro...

or do it like on chappelle show...3 minute intro with "turn my headphones up! uh! turn em up! aight here i go son...oh shi* the beat dropped. wait. turn my headphones up!"

to the op though it really depends on the song and i think having a formula is a bad idea. an intro should be completely tailored to that song...it should set the stage for the story you're trying to tell with it, you know? maybe just 1 bar is enough on some, other beats definitely don't need intros, and maybe some epic beat needs 8 or more.

the best advice i can give you though is unless an intro is short and REALLY adds to a beat- i'm talkng like you can't imagine it without it- do not include intros when you shop your beats to a&rs or major producers. those people are extremely busy and they don't really give a shi* about an intro anyway because intro's don't get played on the radio, so make sure your songs cut right to the chase.
