I know this topic has proly been made over a MILLION times but I just gotta get it off my chest.

Me and my dad were havin a conversation when all of a sudden he says "who you think is better nas, big,or pac?"

I took it to a different level and said "personally I think canibus would lyrically crush all of them"

I regret sayin that to this day because ever since he's be throwin random emcees at me and he'd always say the same thing "I bet you canibus could'nt fuck wit them!"until finally he asked me to bring me a cd of bis.

I played him "Get retarted" "Buckingham Palace" and "2nd Round Knockout"(Which I regret because my pops iz ol skool so he prefers LL),after he heard the tracks he gave bis props but shit just kept getting more deeper and deeper.

He'd buy ol skool underground cds and we'd listen to them and he always say's "I don't care what any1 says canibus can't fuck wit him!"

But I aint tryna hear it,in my opinion bis rulez hip hop as far as lyrical talent goes.

What do ya'll think?

Nas, Big or Pac is a real hard one. id have to say Pac myself for several reasons.

if you are strictly talkin about lyrical power, Canibus takes it with his wordplay and punchlines etc...

but in my eyez Pac gotta be the GOAT becuase he can be sick lyrically and his flow was crazy: but the main thing is he had the best messages and ideas ever in his rhymes. plus he had the realest rhymes of all time and always spit the truth. he was like a muhfuckin philosopher.

yeah canibus is mad ill,but i do think there is a such a thing as beiing TOO smart in your rhymes. hes prolly the most talented, but i think jigga sits in a good threshold of skill/havin great songs. basically i dont think any industry cat can touch him,and i dont think theres a backpacker out there than can touch him either, thats whyi think hes the illest alive. i cant see tupac bein the illest but i can see how sum1 else could, depends who u are and where u live i guess. but i have yet to hear sum1 top big ls flow

I'm and MC/producer/dj and I think every MC is different in some way so you can't really compare em and say one is completely "better" than the other. Our minds are too westernized to believe that BS. But some rappers were/are better at doing specific things.

2Pac was the best at conveying emotion. If you can't feel his music you aren't a man. Big L had good delivery but he didn't have a very complicated rhyme scheme. Cannibus is amazing lyrically if you look at rhyme scheme AND intellectual, but Eminem is just is good or actually better lyrically w/ the mulitiples and inner rhyming AND entertaining. Jay-Z is just good at being commercial, his rhyme scheme was wack b4 Ill mcs started coming out like Cannibus and Em, than he uped his rhyme scheme to compete but he's still wack. What kind of sucker MC or artist for that matter formally retires from the art that they love to do? A fake artist.

Personally for me, my favorite MC would have to be 2pac cause he was political w/ lots his music, though not all, and talked about real issues unlike most rappers today. Technically he wasn't the best rapper but who cares? He's the most missed cause he could express deep emotions, which most rappers don't do today. Friends of mine who are soldiers in Iraq are bumping his music daily cause they're in the grind over there. They aren't playing some phony sucker mc who blabs about nothing other than some stupid random crap like their money, cars, how bad they are, and hoes over and over again in each song.

i think it's ultra gangsta that you and your dad can talk about Hip-Hop.

I have to co-sign that real quick. cherish those times dawg, that's a beautiful thing.

illest of all time, i can't even call it because there's too many out there who's spit some ill shit.
Canibus is definite one'em, but i can't say he's the best of all time becuase Papoose outshine on a track (i forget the name)
Jay-Z is nice when he's on to sumn' but i can't say him because he got his style from Jaz, who i beleive is one of the nicest ever. in addition, Jay-Z has used other peoples lines as if they where his own, and despite the up and downs he's had in career, Nas exposed him.
and we know AZ has outshined Nas on a couple of occasions. all have had their shortcomings at one time.
when asking this question i beleive alot of people forget about alot of emcee who, if you really get open and listen to'em, they've said some ill shit. Genius is one as an examble, he'll say one line which is equivalent to a paragraph or more of material. and on the flip side of that you have Big Pun who seemed to fit a paragragh worth of words into 16 bars while style finessing the track.
then you always Rakim who without a doubt is one of the best period. you got your storytellers like the great slick rick, and Masta Ace.
Definitely Big L is in the same class as one of the best ever.
can't forget the likes of Sean Price and others from the BCC

there's several others that i'm leaving out, but i mention just to say there's alot to take into account when considering the best alive and the best of all time.

But me personally i have to look at the elder statemen of the game as some of the greatest because it was at a time when the music was mostly call and response they forged ahead with verses that made you think, that you made you hit that rewind button just to listen to that phrase just one more time, and gave us lesson that we use and abide by today. so i say all this to say, i can't pick one (even though can't is not in my vocab) but have fun with this debate

Most of these "greatest MC's" discussions are not even valid arguements because most cats aren't into the HISTORY of hip hop to even make a valid point.
1st off, Big L is not even close to one of the greatest MC's. When he was alive, he wasn't even poppin' like that, he was on the 'B-team' of MC's during his era. His "shock-value" punchlines are derived/inspired from the Nasty Nas school of Mc'ing. If one of you had named Smoothe da Hustler or Buckshot Shorty I woulda said "maybe", because THOSE were the cats killin shit in the early-mid 90's. A lotta cats might hate this, but L wasn't even the best outta Children of the Corn, Murda Mase was, he battled all 3 of the Lox by himself!
I personally think Canibus would actually be a household name if he just went thru Fat Beats, Sandbox Automatic or one of the major indie distributors and just sold CD's hand-to-hand and kept his sound raw and scientific. He has a serious fanbase and if he worked college radio and toured with guys like Eastern conf. Def Jux etc, he would be more than a 'what happened to him??' His latest work is definitely "dumbed down" but line-for-line I think he's above the heads of the average listeners.

I love Nas' music, he has an ill catalog of songs, but even HE says that he got his style from the pioneers, and he was hugely inspired by Tragedy the Intelligent Hoodlum.
"Illmatic" is a line from one of Trag's songs,
I think an Illest MC list wouldn't be complete if it didn't include Kool Moe Dee, Busy Bee, KRS, Rakim, Kane, G fuckin Rap, Ice T, Melle Mel, Too Short (yup I said it), LL Cool J, Chuck D, Kool Keith, and I'll put Pac in there too, he wasn't the greatest lyricist, but he
touched a whole lotta people out there.
and Master P (probably gonna get banned for the last one, but i can back it up w/facts!)
The best outta those is a matter of personal preference.
