I want to make elements quieter on the verse, but how?

Side chaining

That should accomplish this. Google "side chaining using Propellerheads Reason". You could also record automate the volume fader of the drum track to boost it during the verse. U could also do the same thing with and EQ on the drum track boosted at certain freqz during the verse.

Side Chainging will give a better feel imo. I use that technique in some of my "drum dominant" tracks.

Ive never got my head around side chaining. Its on my list of things to figure out.
I usually automate the volume.

Or...
You can just automate the channels of each instrument/sound u want to come down in the mixer when the verse drops and then bump them back up in the chorus...Really simple.
This is even more accurate and easier then ever in Reason4.

The ducking effect of tracks by way of side chaining will definitely have you experimenting with new shit. The more subliminal you make that ducking the better. People will be wondering why a certain element in your tracks sticks to them like glue. Little will they know that you actually seduced them with side chaining!

Fucking hell its simple, thanks for posting the vid.
Im gonna get my side chaining on.
I get the feeling that works really well when applying the bassline.

yep...it's a great way to make your basslines or drums stand out say in the verse without having to crank them or over compress them. If you have a particular strong synth or what ever playing in the verse get your side chain on and make the drums kick or bassline make that synth duck out.

Radio has been using this for years. It's the reason the dj or radio personalities voice always pops out or through no matter what.

Relic should employ this for the ILL radio show...he wouldn't have to turn down the music ever! When he speaks into the mic the music will quiet then come back up.
