Work on aggressive straight drum tracks, with gritty kick and snare or break loops.....then choose samples that are not smooth, look for melodies that might be minor, I dunno but that last joint in the showcase to me was hip hop, main thing is try and not focus on the overall musicality...most cats I know that really are very meticulous and musical are RnB dudes that have to make everything fit especially if dealing with seasoned RnB artists....they in a lot of cases are gonna know a little more about musical composition and keys than say your average rapper....the beat is most important for the lyracist, although the music being on point and rhythmical is also....the music is most important for the RnB singer, and it must be musically correct in mostly every aspect.....since you are the musician its not going to be impossible but your mathematics of music will step in everytime and maybe something not so perfect gets perfected a lil too much...ioun know i am rambling but I think you got the ability to do both well man....dont feel bad because I had Trey Songz critique my shit...b4 I know what the hell Trey Songz did LOL but here he was telling me about my hip hop joints, do this do that, i heard this before, its not finished etc...oh well.

i checked the music on your myspace and yeah your beats sure do have an rnb sound too it, the politically correct composing with no surprises everything is composed how it should be a little too much almost.
but theyalso sound like music for a soundtrack, nice builds up and combining melodies make your beats storytelling.
actually the only thing telling me hiphop are the drums although claps arent my favorites hehe. no sampling too be found and a lot of synths with you on the keys.

all in all, i would say just make music...

when i try to make an rnb track i start with a slow drum loop like on 70-80 bpm but then i think its too slow speed it up and BANG its an hiphop track this shit happens all the times.

its really hard when u try to force thing and it end up really bad.

all in all, i would say just make music...

I've heard alotta your tracks, and I just listened to the ones on your Myspace page.....I can hear a singer on the beats, but I wouldn't classify them as R&B...cause I can also hear a dope emcee just rip over them......I think until a song is fully finished with an artist over it, there is no telling what it can be used for.........just my thoughts on the situation........

Love the melodies on your songs dude. If you've listened to J Dillas solo material, he does a lot of soul/R n B sampling and one of the way he beefs them up is by fattening up the bass up a bit. Whatever floats your boat though, your stuff is gold in its own right.

You got a unique, trademark, original style. Put a singer over it - it's R&B, put a rapper over it - it's hip hop. Don't compromise your vision for people who:
a. only like music that they hear on the radio
b. think Timbo/Dre/Storch/Primo/etc is the end all be all of hip hop / R&B music
All those producers I mentioned would have never seen success if they didn't listen to their own voice instead of doing what people expect to hear.

My favorite rnb tracks have always had harder hiphop beats. Ever since Mary J dropped her first album Ive really taken a liking to hard hiphop beats with soulful artists on top, anyway look on the bright side, it makes leasing the beat very profitable. A much larger market.
Ive always wanted to do rnb with the hiphop beats, its a formula for success IMO. I cant stand all them slow jams and smoove shit, but if the beat is hiphop its all good. Some of my favorite rnb....... Amerie - Just One Thing, Tweet - Oops Oh My, Mary J - Whole First Album, Alfonzo Hunter - Weekend Thang, that sort of thing.
Dont compromise on your beats and just keep doing what you do, you do it right.
It takes innovators to lead the way, take Timberland for example. He created a whole new sound for hiphop. He didnt jump on the latest bandwagon, he stayed true to his self and won through, BIGTIME.

do u ur shits hot class... but at the same time u must continue to grow within the style that u have and incorporate new ideas and techniques within ur own style ... thats the diffrence between timbo and many other "one track mind" producers .. he "reinvents" himself evry year...but hes still timbo at the same time. U got crazy talent the only thing that will hold u back is u

Exactly, you have to remember that the Hitmen were heavy into that album as well as Chucky Thompson who had a hand in some of the hottest Mary J joints, at the time after they did all the Biggie and Bad boy production for Puffy, I think that was a big influence on just straight hip hop really crossing over into the RnB realm and kind of kicking the composed mature RnB out of the door along with having to have a complete or very good knowledge of composed music but ballads are still in demand and that type of production has its place as well too, but you hit it on the head because Timbaland came along at the right time to do this and exploit hip hop n RnB, fusing the sounds.

When you think about how Diddy used those hits from the 80's with BIGGIE, alot of the tracks they used where all R&B joints. The artist just turned them into hip hop classics. My man Pharrell is famous for pretty hip hop tracks... so keep doin what you do!
