Lately I've been checking out threads from back in the day...it blows my mind as I read them. Things like Dolby Noise Reduction has all but disappeared. At one time you couldn't buy anything without it and now its fallen off the earth. It's like at one point your interest was for the newest and latest gear, now that we have it, the role has flipped and now the interest is in old gear (as far as finding it, you really got to search).

What ever happened to the great analog vs digital debates? Gone. Everything is pretty much digital now. Yes, theres still some great analog gear out there but nothing in comparison to the old days. No cassette decks, no record stores, no home stereos, everything is on mp3 players nowadays. Ish's amazing!

It had to happen sometime. Remember when quantizing was cheating, and sp heads would talk down on the mpc?

Most of the "old" sound racks from the 80s and 90s you can buy for your es 24 in 24 bit quality for 20 dollars on ebay.

I love this digital shit tho, no memory cards or notebooks full of rack, limiter, reverb, and compression settings...and now EVERYTHING is affordable.

You had to have some loot for hardware in those days. I couldnt afford anything until 2002 when I graduated from college and got a job. How much was an ASR-10 when it first came out? it was atleast 5 figures when it came out wasnt it?

SO many times I would wonder how the hell I would be able to afford mixing boards, amps, EQ's, etc. For the longest time I had my eye on one of those Alesis ADAT machines, remember those? Using VHS tapes lol. I remember when I saw 3 of those tied in together and being controlled via the Alesis BRC, I was like "HOLY CRAP!".

yoooooooooooooo that was the set up! I used to fuck with this guy from my high school back in the day and it turned out his old boy was the bass player/ engineer for Inner Circle. Dude had that Adat setup in his project studio...shit was nasty.

I still want a Dat deck....I dont know why but I want a DAT master lol

Dox, I've been fucking wit studios for real, in one way or another, since 97

I actually cut tape back in the day. Glad I don't have to do that anymore.

LOL.....Cutting tape is prob one of the most awful tasks imparted on an engineer back then, Ive done my fair share of cutting and splicing for a local news station here back in my early college years...that shit was so antiquated even then to me. I remember giving the head engineer shit cuz they didnt want to use a DAW to do the same thing which would cut down post production dramatically...lol.

I just picked up some monitors from a guy that was all into vintage gear. He had a 16 track one inch tape recorder that he paid $20,000 for back in the day and now he's selling it for $2,000! I asked him what he used for editing and he just 'we played it right, no editing', crazy! I have to admit though, shit recorded to tape sounds sooooooo good.

thats how it had to be! U just had to play your shit right all the way thru! That disconnect is why musicians and pro audio guys dont veiw hip hop as music cause when you put it perspective the computer is doing MOST of the work.

But fuck that its 2010 lol

If you guys wanna see some cool shit there is a making of the Black Dynamite soundtrack on youtube...one guy did it...ALL ANALOG, he talks about the differnces in sound for a lil.

For sure, I love recording drums to tape. But do you know what I love even more. Hitting "save" in my DAW. I WILL NEVER GO BACK!

Oh c'mon Chriss, for the sake of that famous "warmth" that you get from analog gear in general...lol. Right now, the goverment and I are working on a DPGB (digital production gear bomb) that will destroy ALL digital production gear on the planet. NEVER SAY NEVER! You will continue to do what you do, you WILL go back to analog taping and YOU WILL LOVE IT!

Muuuuhahahahaaaaa
