Humming Basslines

do you ever hum basslines off the top of your head and then use the melody in songs?

or is this a stupid idea?

Hey,

NO!!!!!! That is a great idea!

And to even take your idea further, sometimes it's a good idea to have a little dictaphone/minicassette player handy so you can record yourself humming, this is useful for when you have an idea for a melody but aren't near your keyboard, sometimes you forget what the melody is after a while...you play back the tape when you get home figure out the notes in your sequencer. A friend of mine does this for music, lyrics, or other musical ideas and it has been very useful.

Yeah I call my voice mail on my cellphone and humm the groove or lightly describe or make a sound I want or leave a name of a song I might wanna sample.

no doubt, hummm basslines, drums, melodies and all. And I treat my digital recorder like it was American Express { never leave home without it! }.

Lol yeh i use my voice recorder on my mobile. But when i get home and try to lay it out, i forget what type of bass noise, what the snare is on, etc. Never really works out most the time. I usually work the bassline with the sample.

To take this a step futher, isnt that what a vocoder is for? Like on the microKorg, cant you hum into it and then tweak it the way you want it? If not could somone explain what the vocoder is for?

no a vocoder wont make a bassline, but it takes your voice and fucs it up, like u can sound like a robot or a monster or whatever u tweak the knobs to sound like. those things are pretty damn cool

Alot of the times,I come up with whole fuckin beats inside my head, and i beatbow em out loud,bassline and everythang.That's a perfect technique because once u get it out,i'tz a piece of cake layin it down!

I TRY 2 RECORD DIFFERNT BASSES TO SE HOW 1 MAKES THE TRAK
SOUND COMPARED 2 THA OTHER. 2 ME BASSES CAN GIVE YA TRAK A WHOLE NATHER FEEL. SO I TAKE THE TIME OUT 2 HUM IT OUT OR WHATEVER.

I use my nextel a lot for that I be in my car drivin' to work bangin' beat in my head. lot of times I'm in my like I siad listen t a beat I just did and hear and bass note or a melody for tha track, I hummm in my phone. But yeah i feel what yall cats talkin' bout...lol

I'm surpised someone hasn't invented a brain recorder yet, record my dreams lol, but foreal record the beats I hear in my head so clearly, I hear every part, the drums, pads, breakdowns its a masterpiece.
