As a producer who is building a track record, how realistic is it to start your publishing early on in your career?'

experience is key.the more you have of it the better off you will be. so anything that u develope over time becomes great. as far as publishing your tracks... gaining exposure is key in any form of industry especially the music industry which makes a habit to take consistency and persistence over talent and skill.

Usually you deal with publishing and rights thereof if you are getting signed to some form of deal. Then the royalties derived from publishing would be split during contractual negotiations.
