What would i need to learn to understand the basics for producing your own sounds?

Im talking about sounds as in effects, like Timbaland and N.E.R.D. how do they create such unique sounds?

Thanks.

Yeah i mean there is so many presets and ways you can tweak em its pretty easy to create your own sound. At the same time sometimes yuo just wanna get that hard trademark sound and just go with that. Sometimes too much tweaking just sounds weird.

Even if its a preset that they use - a good deal of what you hear that makes those sounds shine isn't the sample but the engineering behind the finished sound. For example, they might be using a really dope kick drum sample but then the engineer tosses it through a 12,000 dollar compressor and uses good EQ processing and then throws a really diffused reverb on it with subbass exicter and suddenly the kick is huge thats unreal! This is a random example but u get the point. Once the songs are on a CD theres numerous factors to consider in what your hearing.

Also remember that the equipment that these guys are using is worth thousands. theyve got essentially every keyboard, synthesisers, sound module ever made (well timbo claims to, neptunes just seem to).
Timbaland has about 5 Nekos (or does he have the Miko), which are about $3k a piece
so money makes a huge huge difference when it comes to sounds

but, as for synthesisers, im guessin you use FL, learn and master the 3x Osc, thisll help a lot in producer your own sounds. and effects are often what make sounds sound different as well

Word, and im not dismissing the fact that the producer himself plays a big roll in the what comes out but so does the gear thats used. Ultimately, excellent gear plus the right talent is what really equals a solid final product. If either side of that coin is weak then you basically dont have shit...usually anyways.

also, dont go out and buy the expensive equipment, unless you have the talent to match. theres nothing worse in my opinion then some1 havin an MPC2000xl and a Triton, when he's 6months into producin. its just not good

kinda offtopic, but there was a vid with neptunes, where they said you have to master the equipment you have, and know it inside out, before you move onto something else. its sound advice

thats why i say, learn the 3x OSC, or another basic synth, learn about Ring Modulation and Frequency modulation, learn what different waves mean soundwise, what the envelopes mean, gates mean etc etc
and one of the best ways to do this is through trial and error (imo), and just read up on it
