How many think...

that rappers, or any artist for that matter, should only have about one or two producers driving their album?

I believe having one or two producers leads to an album that has a natural togetherness that ususally means not skipping tracks when listening to the album. For example, take Jay-Z's "Reasonable Doubt" album. Most of the tracks have the same kind of feel, but they're different(same thing with "Blueprint"-Kanye & Just Blaze). This same thing drove the sound of the 60's and 70's. I'm not saying that we should go back to the past, however, I think that the feel those album had would be a breath of air. Instead, we have 15 track albums with 13 different producers, many tracks sticking out like a sore thumb(recent Talib Kweli)I know this noting takes food out of the mouths of us as up and coming producers, but do you feel what I am saying?

What do you think about that?

One!

Find a style, preferably your style, and master it. That way, you will be known for what you do, not who you sound like, then you'll be hopefully producing full albums.

I agree... most of the best material came with minimal producers involved. It's mainly the fact that you get a chance to experience different facets to that producer's shine. No one likes a movie without a consistent theme, nor a cartoon, book, etc. Music is no different.

man ya cant ask it like that. theres too many variables. there have been times when not many producers worked and times when a different producer for every track worked. it depends. and i like both.

Cool, I feel you guys. However, (Dantson) I am in no way trying to sounds like anyone in my production. I'm merely speaking on the general state of music. I can only do me.

When I said "you", I didn't mean YOU directly, Quack. I meant you, broadcasted to everyone just starting out. "I can only do me" is a good philosophy to live by.

Almost ALL good albums were done by 1, maybe 2, producers, in ANY genre of music. People don't fall in love with an artist for their voice, or lyrics, it's their "Sound". Some artists incorporate this 'Truth' into their albums, giving that "themed" sound to the album. Some merely go for the 'variety hour' approach, which IS amusing, but not nearly as satisfying, although it may be more financially in their favor to do so.

Quincy Jones is well known for creating entire albums of great material. Had he been involved in hip-hop directly, God knows how many classic albums he'd be responsible for.

Not in my life, it isn't! :p
The only thing up over here is my money. Oh wait, no. Nevermind. That's down.

Wrong direction.

Word. People dont have "GROUPS" much anymore...They just attach themselves to the next big popular producer and cash in on the bandwagon, disregarding what made the initial fans that dug that artists sound in the 1st place like that artist.

Hey man I feel what you are saying, being from the old Skool I do not see the value of collaborating every 5 minutes its cool but there is absolutely no value in that for me, I have my own artists and I like working with the same group of people I know....i like to take hold of an artist and create with them from the beginning to the end....but the dillema recently if you ask me is producers not knowing their place in production......a producer is just that.....a producer....what has happened I liken it to Free agency in Football.....it tore lots of the fabrics of relationships and allegiance apart so no one feels tied to anyone......as a producer nowadays you kind of feel like artists are a dime a dozen and you kind of wonder......well I will record this track with this cat and hmmmmm will I see him again?......will he run with your tracks to some other producers lab and take your shidd over there and then that producer is sitting there dissecting your work and remaking your work or your beats....(oh yeah I could tell you a story of this someone told me yesterday they were remaking some beats for a label because the producer caused a stink and there was some dispute between him and the label but they liked his tracks)..on the real that shidd happens more than you think...I see peoples beats come thru my lab all of the time from producers in my area........that ain't cool, I fault producers not locking their artists into projects strictly with them.......I myself do not like albums that you have each beat by a different producer for the same artist......all tracks to do not fit every artist......in my opinion I heard all the ranting and raving over the Black album.....in my humble opinion there was some absolutely horrible production on there compared to a lot Jayz's other work.........people will disagree but I stand by my statement........yes it is possible to do it and come out with a product that is good but you tend to wonder......what really is this artist's style?..........I am with you on this man and I am starting to run into more and more people that think like this............I am Sure that 9th likes producing for all of the different people he does now but I think he liked being the core of lil brother......as RZA did with WuTang even though he was quite capable of getting on projects with other producers.......most big producers do not like that either as there are smaller slices of the pie equalling a smaller cut of the overall album sales if they have points......Quack I totally see your point but the reality is that unless producers start locking their projects, starting small labels and signing artists the phenomenon of the 8 producer album will continue......

for me...i love working with a lot of different producers. i can do a lot of different styles of music, but in the end, it always feels like me. of course i had to learn to not throw that all on the same album. i've done albums with just one producer and some with many. at the end of the day you just have to choose songs that sound cohesive together

I think only Wu and DITC did that shit well, Holmz..... although even WU eventually diluted themselves with too many unreliable people.

It depends. I personally would get 3-4 different producers if I would make and album. there might not be enough differences in different songs with only one producer, so that the album might get boring.

If ya don't want a 'wack' track skipped, publish a cassette!
