How long is long enough?

Latest issue in the lab...If whatever you're doing right now isn't working out for your best interest...how long will it take you to change your game? or do you just stick to whatever you believe in whether it hits or misses?

IMO, I think one should carefully make decisions when thinking of change...I believe that you should stick with what you believe in versus giving up and prematurely changing your flavor. That would suggest that you never really had confidence in what you invisioned from the begining.

Change is always good but sometimes it can really set you back. You may just miss the window of opportunity by changing. Then again you may have made the change just in time.

What do you all think?

^^ i hear what ur sayin relic....

but i think u should stick to ur guns in MOST cases.... i think most people look for the easy way out.... they think something is not working so they scrap it before they have even given it a chance to devlop. The other thing they gotta think about is if they are REALLY doing it to the very best of their ability and are REALLY giving a sincere effort to really make their ideas pop off. Posting tracks on myspace aint gonna make u the next big thing u gotta grind mega hard. Do U honestly dig ur own music/style? Can u really just close ur eyes, pop in ur own disc, and say to urself "damn this shit is crazy!" If u cant, then its not ready. And no one else will feel it if u cant feel it urself. If u believe in something strongly, and try ur best to put it out and display it, then i really dont think u can fail. Maybe u will lose money, maybe u wont become the next big artist/super producer, but u wont outright fail. And hate is the new love, u cant allow urself to get discouraged by negativity. Just as many people hate on the top artist and producers as much as other cats love them. I think most cats just plain dont try hard enough is my honest take on it.

If something isnt working out for your best interest than its insanity to keep doing it.
Thats the definition of insanity in fact. To keep doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.

Sincock are you going to protest the olympics?

lol, nah but the bullshit going on over here at the moment is making me pretty damn sick of it. I was thinking of starting a thread about what's been going down but it's getting somewhat childish over here with people's reactions to France etc and I'm not trying to think too much about it at the moment.

definitely. If you feel your own shit, you couldn't care less about what other people think. The fact that other people will like it is a plus. Intrinsic rewards work just as well as the extrinsic (rep, money, fame).

so yeah, stay the same if you feeling it, change if you want to. It's impossible to give a quantitative answer to the question though :-(

Of course it is cause thats the type of thing Dac likes to ask, lol
Yo of course "Do You" but if you are trying to make money off of it, then it would be stupid not to follow trends and such because thats where the fad of the music business is.
the key phrase to me in the question is "in your best interest", just excepting whats in your best interest is hard enough sometimes but if you are knowingly being stubborn and not doing what is in your best interest just because your hard headed and want to stick to your guns because you know som much more than everybody involved then THAT would be stupid and thus insane .

If you question the fact that you have to change, you're probably not doing something right and indeed have to change. You might simply be posing this question in order to read feedback reinforcing an answer you already know.

These are just topics that come up in the lab, (round table type ish that we do when we need to release some industry concerns) I personally really dig ME but I'm not out there grinding to make it in the production side of the industry...

God this question was sparked by an artist that was featured on 106 & park a couple of months ago, (I forget which one exactly but anyway...) he was talking about his lack of success doing east coast style hip hop and then changing over to dirty south style and finding some success. He hasn't blown up BIG but he seemed to be content with "doing a little better" which is perfectly OK IMO, but who's to say that he wouldn't have found more success had he stayed where he was at?

Which leads me to what afriquedeluxe said..."It's impossible to give a quantitative answer to the question though "...I agree with you BUT, it's a question that WE all face everyday in life where we have to make a decision without knowing the consequences... i.e. If you knew that you would be involved in a deadly car accident the next time you left your driveway...would you move your car? Probally not, but not having a clue to what awaits us is how we live everyday.

=)

Right. But you have to know your objective. If it was the artist's objective to make money, and changing his style up worked-- then he was right.

What do you want to do? If it's about the money, then make some changes. Just be honest with yourself.

This topic/question has somewhat gone in a different direction than intended...It's just a question of when do you say it's time for a change? The way we approached it in the lab was a simple matter of "time"...*(i.e. Some said that after a year of basically standing still, not really failing but not moving forward, they would change up their game and try something else...Some said they would stand still for up to 3yrs.)

I guess its how you (as an individual) measure success -vs- what the general public calls success. IMO, you could actually be making good money (lets say 100 grand a year) and feel successful whereas someone at the top of the game (like K.West) could be making 100 grand per track.

I think money is a major factor in determening "success" but not everything...ofcorse the better you are at the other factors the more money you will likely make, so it all goes hand in hand IMO. This still raises the question, how long is long enough? How long do you settle for being mediocre or on the bottom half of the field before you throw in the towel or make a serious change in what you are doing?

Once again, Im not looking for a "correct answer" or any mind blowing philosiphical answer, i'm just looking for your thoughts if it were you wearing these shoes.

=)
