The other day, I was chillin in the car playing some of my new beats for a friend and she asked how I do it. I was blazed, so maybe that's why the question hit me so hard, but I really thought about it. How do I make beats!? I mean, yeah I use FL studio and cool edit with some nice vst's (blue tubes, korg legacy collection, minimonsta some other stuff), samples, midi controller...whatever. But the crazy thing is that when I start a beat, all I have is the click of a metronome and when I'm done I have something I'm proud to bang in my car. I guess it's just a testament to the power of the human mind. But maybe it's just me....I guess I find little things to be amazing...like the fact that I can turn on a faucet in my house and have water come out 100% of the time.
Another Thing...I never understood the people who are like, "I want to start making beats...what can I use to do it" because nobody I know who makes anything decent started like this. For me, my friend sent me a pirated copy of frutiy loops (prolly like version 2.1) and we started making little diss tracks about each other over it. I fell in love with it and kept going. My friends who produce are kinda the same way...they knew someone who did it too and just started "doing it". Infact, I think it's almost impossible to produce unless you have some friends--real friends...not internet friends-- who you can show what you're working on. Okay...a lot to post..but when you have as boring of an internship as me you can make long posts like this.
Another thing I was just thinking about...
When I visit boards like these, I always see people asking for "books on how to make beats" or "how can i learn how to make good hip hop melodies." I hate reading that stuff because it's so pointless. You just have to do it...for a long time....like years. One interesting thing I like to do is go back to my eaaaaarly stuff...like first few months/years and listen to the "garbage" I was making back then. I like doing that because you can listen to some real gritty stuff with no technical knowledge. It was just you making your most sincere effort. For me, I've found that my drums "back then" were interesting and had a sound to them that I've started to incorporate back into my newer style.
