How is this going?

The album is with the mastering engineer, I think its very nearly done.
I have to mix 2 tracks again, but apart from that its going well.
Slow, but well. The engineer is doing the mastering cheap in his own time, so we have to bear with him. Should be finished in the next week or so.

I do agree that there is no formula, but still having a limiter can solve a lot of a clipping problems

Never above -3dB. Why? This gives me a bit of headroom for any peeks or spikes that may occure. I max out at 0dB first, but then I lower the dB to -3. I've done this the last 6 years.

Yeah, I stick with -3db now too.

I've started to use Audiocation's R-128 VST; a level meter that is compatible with EBU's new dynamic levels.

Now I'm not at all skilled in explaining exactly how it works, but it measures levels within a very very small time interval, it shows the highest value constant, and the current value flashes around a bit. If the value displayed is under 9 then everything is Ok, otherwise it says over, if the value is below -9 then it says low.

I use wavearts plugins, the limiter works for me. But then wavearts isnt free.
