How do you use a Drum Break?

In simple terms could someone explain to me what a drum break is???

Where does it go in the course of a song. or loop???

And how I can create my own???

I read posts where people get them off records but I want to do them myself but I want to make sure the drum break is what I think it is...

Which I thinks its when the normal drum pattern is disturbed by a brief and new drum pattern to complete or create some variation in the original drum pattern. then the normal pattern is resumed

I sound kinda nerdy trying to explain this but is this correct???

Homie, think Rich Harrison and the song, one thing for Amerie, that entire drum backing is primarily an old Break, a lot of people have called that GoGo, slightly true, because the reason why it sounds like GoGo is that the style of Drumming that Chuck Brown and his band introduced naturally made its way to gogo drummers RE (Footz) and EU(JuJu) and other bands..........a lot of the record Chuck made in the begininning contained breaks, that a lot of drummers back in the 60's and 70's used the music then since it was band centric focused a lot on the drummer and percussion and the studio engineers that recorded them knew that and put their time into making them sound good, the irony though is that a lot of GoGo was used in breaks in the early stages of hiphop and was sampled....and also a lot of those patterns started getting copied to drum machines when the break itself was not available, its like having the drum track all ready to go off your favorite song to add your melody and music.......ok now thats out of the way, you can take that break and turn it into a loop either by chopping it working with it in the lab......you would be surprised at how many dope beats that bang have breaks as the backbone, and not a lot of drum programming but layering and beefing up of the drums.......you can slow the break or speed it up then you add your percussion and other sounds, hit me up I have a ton of breaks homie......now I use breaks more so for my drums thats where I get about 98% of the drums I use in my songs, I beef them up and mix them to get different sounds or use them as they are.....rarely do I use a whole break as the drums for my beats.

Beanie Sigel's album track "I've Got to Have It" is a break actually. I got the real album and was looking at the credits like... "I have that vinyl record!" Pretty exciting...lol. But yea "Rose Royce: Rose Royce Strikes Again"... I actually sampled something else off the same side, but didn't hear that break... which is why I find it useful to listen to records 2-3 times... at least...

But also, aside from taking the break and looping it... I've actually layered on top of it and then taken the sample back out to "add flexibility" and my own flavor... sometimes it works... if it's basic... sometimes it doesn't... I think hats are the hardest thing to imitate

I dont consider myself a sampler, but I like to play with drum samples...

When I use a drum break, I like to chop it off and make a new basic drum pattern with it and use the original break in some parts of the song to give another vibe to a specific part of the song...
drum breaks have a lot of accents (sounds that are harder, longer... different than the rest of the pattern) , so those can be used to give flavor to a simple drum pattern...

a drum break is any open drum sequence in ANY genre of music, usually between 1/2bar and up to like 32 bars and more (apache), often found at the beginning the end and in the middle. you cant recreate a "real" drum break on a computer, because you are never going to be able to recreate the originallity of the kit it was played on or the reverb of the room it was recorded in. so dig dig dig, and find some dusty breaks, use em and check the difference....

and no, i do also respect compiuter drums, ii just dont use em....

instead of chopping out the individual hits and playing those you can also slice the break into like 1/4 or 1/8 peices, then rearrange those chunks however you want

i dont like simply looping a break as u cannot mix down or EQ the individual drums. you could say that the drums are already mixed, but this mite not work with your instruments.

so i prefer to chop the shit up.

exactly. I have to be able to mix everything down individually... or have the flexibility of creating my own drum pattern out of it. I cant just loop something, I have too many ideas to settle for a repeated loop.

If you want to create your own drum breaks that sound Vintage. You got to get to work on creating you own samples, get you a drummer and record him or her playing various style. The sound will be affect by different factors-( Room Acoustic, Mic placement, tune of the drums, what type of kit your using, equipment for processing, and more). Drum Kit from Hell is a great piece of software or Groove Agent. You just got to know how to use it. If your a digger then you can find those classic breaks, You just got to look and look. The means are limitless you just got to make the dcecision on wha you want to do.

A quick tip on using break and re tracking them. I do this on Reason, but I'm sure its ways to do this on other software. Once you chop up the break and put it into recycle and make a rex file. You can load that rex file ito a NNXT play it out normally, by loading it into a DR rex and tracking it and putting that sequence track on NNXT, but then you route the kicks, snares, hats and precussion to differnt outs. That way you have the break playing and you have it going to differnt mixer tracks for new effects.

You gotta grab that drum and forcefully Break the S*** out of it..
Once completely broken slam it into the song either over and over again or just at one point by itself so everyone knows you did it..
