I'm sitting on about 2000 records in Brooklyn. Need to sort through them, put them back in the right cases.
Thinking of sorting chronolgicaly this time, normally I sort by genre.
Problem is if I need to DJ, picking out records would be kind of difficult if they're sorted by year.
also, compilations sometimes have music from a range of years.
Anyone have thoughts/ideas/practices on sorting their vinyl?

Alphabetical order by Artist. Good luck and if you get tired of doing that you can ship them to me and I'll handle it. <grin>

If you feel like keeping a database catalog for all those records, let me know. I created a database a long time ago so I could keep track of everything I have. That way if ever I'm looking for something but aren't sure if I have it or not, or where it is, I just search my database.

Im gonna tell you , the best way but the hardest way would be to actually "file" them.
Givin each record a number and color code..Then enter that shit into a data base so if you want one just look it up and go to it!
That would take a long ass time tho , but it would be THE most organised way to do it!
Ill come up there this weekend and help.

Too bad we don't have the teleportation device, or I would buy some pizza and beer and we can all sort em out...
It's gonna be tough to do the database thing, I think I could better spend that time on a few other projects...I need general sections, either alphabetic / by label / by genre / by producer / chronological etc...

I was thinking that too, a lot of us identify music by periods of our lives, for instance, what kind of records you were playing back in 1991.
I guess it comes down to which way requires the least thought to find what you're looking for (without taking the time to type out a full data base)...

Man i'm telling you, physically put them by artist and then in the database you can add all that good stuff like year, producer, notes. BROOKLYN ZOO!

I just have two stacks.... the records I've listened to and the ones I will listen to eventually. One leans to the left.. the other leans to the right. Sort of like a book. I can tell where I left off.

I convert all my vinyl to CD and I alphabatize the CDs. And for some odd reason I can remeber where a certain record is in the stack.
