In what order do you make your beats when you make one for an artist... do you make the beat around the lyrics, or do you tell them to make a song around the beat???

I get my best songs when i make the beat around the song.(but i rap too so that way is just easier for me).

If you are working with a versatile or in the game for awhile lyracist..whether singer or rapper....they can write to anything but....you will be making most tracks on how you know a song might be structured for instance, an intro....about 8 bars of the verse....the maybe 4 bars of the hook and back to the 8bars thats simple or yan double the length of the verse if or vary depending how you feel or the mc or singer feels....for singers if you have a good loop beat they will usually help you create some bridges or chord changes....the best thing to do is study both hip hop and RNB really there is not a big difference unless you are doing say and RNB ballad type song which you might want to study some mainstream song structures of top RNB hits....

Usually the 'artist' asks for a beat and says which type he's seeking, we then play a catalog of beats in that category, if he likes one, he writes to that beat, then we make changes to fit his text...

If it's R&B, the 'artist' usually has a text, and then we try and structure the beat around that.

Also, I suggest you do a search in the forums, I know this has been discussed a few times before.

Hey,
Both the beat and lyrics are critical to making a good track, we like to make sure that they compliment each other and edit both to make sure they work together.

In our case we make the beat first, then have the rapper record his lyrics on top of it. While recording, we edit some of the phrases and words to flow with the beat; if a lyric sounds good the way it is but doesn't match the beat, we edit the beat to match them.

Take care,

Nick
